I've been using a Juwel Filter System + Heater for over a year now, and both the pump & heater have malfunctioned or broken at least once whilst I have had them both. Not to mention I found the filter to be pretty poor at keeping the water clean.

I was wondering if there is a decent, perhaps cheaper? alternative to the Juwel Filter System.

I have the tank (190 litres) in my bedroom very close to where I go to sleep at night, so having it as quiet if not quieter than the current Juwel filter/pump is pretty important.

So in essence..is there filters which tick the following boxes:

- Will do a excellent job at filtering 190 litres+ of water.
- Is nice & quiet so I can go to sleep with it on.
- Is cheaper/easier than the Juwel-5-seperate-pads system.

Note: Money is not an issue & external is perhaps preferred but not essential.

All posts will be greatly apprechiated.
I'm apprehensive to go out and buy one and find that it is more expensive to keep and too noisy so I can't get to sleep!

Thank You in advance,
Mike.

i agree.... juwel filters are a bit, well, pants.

I replaced mine with a tetratec ex1200 - which runs silently... you can remove the juwel filter easily with a long knife and a bit of patience... it's attached with four blobs of silicone... just be careful of the tank edge.

the ex700 would be fine for your tank

If money is no object - get a top end ehiem ;)

If your on a bit more f a buget - get the tetratec ;) (I'm about to for our rio 240)

the ex1200 rocks... you won't regret it

Do you know by any chance how often the media will need to be replaced & how noisy it will be for the EX1200? :)

Thank you so far for your help guys!

it comes with foam, ceramics, bio balls, and floss... only the floss will need replacing often.

when i first got mine it was about the same volume as the 1000lph pump that came with my juwel... now it barely makes a sound...

Wow that sounds excellent.

So according to my souces (you!) I'd only need to replace the section marked 5 on the image attatched?
The Tetratec website mentions having to change the floss "When it becomes dirty", how often is that really? It also mentions section 4 (Carbon Sponge) will need replacing every "4-6 weeks", is that reliable information?

I'm going to do some research into how much these sponges cost.
The Juwel ones cost too much imo to replace. If with the EX1200 you only need to replace these two parts of media in the filter, it'd be worth it just by saving time, money & effort not having to replace all those darn Juwel sponges!

I thank you in advance to your reply!

Sorry could someone confirm to me if it is right that the two replacement parts with the TetraTec EX series are the carbon & wool parts? Do the balls never need to be changed? (As long as they are cleaned in the tank water).

thats right... i don't use tetra's replacements either...

i don't use any carbon... i've replaced that with a litre of alfagrog bio-media (£1.95 off ebay) and instead of buying the tetra brand filter wool pad... i just use two of the foam blocks in the top chamber with a layer of ordinary filter wool between.
