Hi all

As iv just upgraded to a external filter, i want to remove the standard juwel box filter in the left corner of the tank(rekord 96) and free up some space.
Has anyone had any luck with doing this??

ahhhh that sounds straightforward, although i know it wont be!!

Do you know if the silicone is on the base or the sides?

silicone tends to be on the back, u need a long blade to reach right over to the other side,

i used a flexible craft knive to remove mine, also the tank was empty

Ive just taken mine out of a rio 240 i though it would be a task and a half but it acctualy came off in my hand........almost, it comes out complete no messing, the crap you may find underneith is astonishing though  remember to keep your filter sponges though and stuff em in your external one to seed it with the bacteria if it hasnt been running long.

It really just does depend on how long the filter has been in the tank - some people seem to have the fight of their lives to get it out. With others it just "falls out" :) Mine wasn't a struggle at all, but I still had to saw through almost all the blobs - despite the filter being 3 years in the tank.

But yes - that disgusting mess under and behind the filter is just

Mine has been in around 3 years too.

Im really not lucking forwards to it! i have the inch thick, black, cave type backing across the inside back of the tank, so getting down the side of the filter is near impossible......

see how it goes!

mmmm see what you mean if you have that backing and it could be a bit more tricky. But as your filter has also been in for about 3 years, it might just be OK. The blobs are not too far from the corners, so you might even be able to stick the knife in from the top on the back panels (if that makes sense).
And with a bit of luck the bottom ones will just give way if you very gently ease it forward (once the top ones are all slices through).

Just see how it goes, but I'm sure it won't be as bad as you think :good:

Which external filter have you 'upgraded' to?

Hi

I got myself a fluval 305 and having been praying for it not too leak ever since.
Seems like a decent bit of kit so far, and i think im getting more filtration than i need, which is nice!! :good:

That is a good filter without doubt. Why did you feel the need to get an external?

I only ask as I have Juwel tanks myself.

Hi mate

To be honest it was nothing to do with performance really, i found the juwel filters tricky to access and maintain with ease, mostly because i have alot of accessories sat on the hood!

I also wanted to free up a little space with it not being the biggest tank.....and of course because it looks impressive when you open the cabinet door :good:

So i thought id go external so i can just shut off the flow and get to the filter easily for cleaning....
