Hi Guys

Up late as so excited at setting up my new and first tropical fish aquarium which arrived yesterday!

I've everything set up and running now, just waiting to add live plants tomorrow (later today now) then fishless cycling can begin.

One thing though, not sure if my filter is working correctly,as must admit, this being my first tank I'm not sure how it is supposed to sound and do etc.

I wasn't sure whether they/it is supposed to send out constant flow of bubbles moving the surface or not..as mine isnt.

Mine is reasonably quiet and you can then hear the pump coming to life and it then sends out some fine bubbles through the outlet then a slight gurgling and a few more bigger bubbles, then goes quiet, although still running as if you look under hood you can see stream flicking the surface.

Anyone got a Juwel bio flow internal filter and if so is what i'm describing (probably badly) common or should I start to worry?

Everthing is happening in a cycle which repeats itself though, its not as if its intermittant bubbles then nothing for 10 mins. Its bubbles then silence for a short period then bubbles for 10-15 secs

Happy for you Ruby!

Most filters will get air trapped in them on startup. I don't know this Juwel that well but maybe if its attached to the tank wall with suction cups you could reach in, detach it temporarily, move it out from the wall some and then tilt it various ways and gently jiggle it a little, all of this taking place underwater. This might help get the air out, if indeed I'm anywhere near the mark on what you need, lol.

ps. you sound like you're doing everything right!

standard juwel filters only pushes the water out into the tank if you want to aggitate the water you can get the juwel air diffuser

there is only traped in the filters it will soon clear tbh

waterdrop. the juwel filter are silconed in place but you take the pump and media out

last silly question you did take all the media out unwrap it and rince it ???

yeah just a bit of air trapped in, if you can then jiggle the filter around a bit to free it, if you can't then don't worry it'll most likely sort itself in a day or so.

you should be able to hear a gentle electrical buzz/hum and depending on the level of your water perhaps some splashing where it breaks the surface.

no need to have bubbles going across the tank from it, so long as you've got ripples on the surface of the water then there is agitation. :good:

Thanks Guys

I'm going to look into this this afternoon.

To answer some of the points.

Yes i've unwapped the various filter from the plastic bags and kept them in the order they stipulate and then left them in their plastic outer holder which is then inserted into the static filter box media compartment as shown (You cannot detatch it)

The filter does make the gentle hum,and does move the water surface, but each time in cycle it definately shoots out bubbles across the water surface.

I will see if jiggling things about helps or if its simply a matter of time.

Also I've not yet fully filled the tank (thats this afternoons task after putting the live plants in) but I did put enough water in to 3/4 cover the outlet nozzle .I'll see it it still works the same when tank is fully filled (theres probably only another inch of water to add though so not sure that will make such a difference)

As I said the pump is working, just because I dont know how it should sound, operate I wanted to check on here to either ease my mind ie its supposed to work like it is or to confirm that I have a problem either from putting it wrong or a fault.

I'll keep you posted unless of course my comments make anyone immediately aware that i've made a 'novice' mistake in the set up.

If you've only 3/4 covered the outlet nozzle at a guess I'd say that the out-flow is causing a small 'whirlpool' right near the outlet, that then allows a venturi type effect feeding bubbles into the water stream.
Once that happens though the water is 'broken up' by the bubbles, and the whirlpool collapses, the venturi effect stops, and the flow returns to normal.
Of course once the flow returns to normal, the water isn't 'broken up' anymore and the whirlpool starts to form again, and your in the cycle.

It could be this that's happening, usually it's quite tricky to get going, and needs the waterlevel to be just above the outlet nozzle, but it's entirely possible that your nozzle fans out, and the water level is actually already slightly above the 'flow'.

I'm pretty sure that it will stop when you top the tank off :)

Oh, that probably explains it. Agree with schmill - outlet nozzle probably meant to be completely submerged and you've presently got it in a state where it can suck in some air and then shoot it out again.

Live plants.....done
Filter.......done

Thanks guys

My tank is now set up and after giving a good 12-24 hours for filter/heater to get going I'm going to start the add and wait fishless cycle.

The filter (now the outlet nozzle is fully submerged) seems to be working fine in that there is a very quiet hum and you can detect the water surface movement, but no large bubbles like before and very very silent..well impressed.

I now just need to keep an eye on the heater to make sure I inserted that correct (although there only seemed to be one way) Its the type that slides down into its own recess inside the filter cannister. It says you will see a red light when it switches on (which I've yet to see and indeed couldnt really detect where this light is even when looking at the heater out of the box) but it could be itys not needed to turn on as I had my water quite warmish to fill tank.

I have a thermometer on the inside of the tank (not a strip) so am monitoring it as I know its says it can take 12 hours for the heater to get working.

The reading on that has said round about 80 since filling tank 7/8ths yesterday/early hours this morning :zz

I left heater and filter running overnight for first time and thermo reading was still just about, maybe slightly under 80 this morning so I assume heater must have kicked in at some point as with a cold night surely the tank water temp will have dropped quite a few degrees if no heat overnight?

I've turned the temp up on the heater anyway just to try and see that it is working (maybe me being paranoid...again :S

I'm well happy with my tank set up and decoration. Not upto the professional standard I see from peoples set up on here...but the main think is I'm happy with it.

Thanks for all your help so far guys.

Now the tricky and patient bit.....cycling and no doubt I will be asking for yet more help when things start to go pear shaped but hopefully from all the reading and advice I've got off here and my coaching from Miss W (you know who you are) :flowers: then maybe some mistakes can be prevented

One last thought/question for now though..........does anyone know a good doctor..........as knowing how excited I am now, when it comes to the actual homing of my first fish,i'm sure I'll need medication to calm me down :D

ha ha

glad it's all getting there. :D

remember trust the thermometer not the heater so adjust the heater until the thermometer reads the right temp. :good:

and another tip, heaters are prone to failing and playing with them doesnt help, so keep it how it is give it 3 days, then adjust accordingly, but theyve got the markings on now... i think, good start BTW
