Juwel aquarium filter has died. What can I do?!

Right, you are meant to clean them once a week if you mean the floss pad that goes on the top.

im not familiar with these juwel tanks. are the filters removeable. if so y not just give them a through cleaning in old tank water. i find that i need to do so every couple of months on my filters or so when they strart to slow down.

You can add a sponge filter or a box filter that runs off an air pump. If you add it soon enough you could avoid a cycle if your bacteria haven't died yet. Also, another idea would be if you have, or could get a powerhead you could couple the output from the powerhead to the intake on the Juwel filter to get the water going through your filter media and keep the colony alive until you get something else.

Good Luck!

I've always been quite meticulous over my sponges, I have only been changing the white one every fortnight though since reading on here it was unnecessary to be as quick as they recommend.

Going new filter shopping this morning. I just hope it's not too late!

This ones the rekord 60. USELESS!

I cleaned out the pipe, nothing. I hear a hum but I guess that's the heater. I've ruined my carpet, filthyed my bathroom, and I am in a serious bad temper.

I know exactly what's wrong - or am 99% sure anyway.

Take the whole filterhead apart. All the pieces. Wash the impellor very well and under a showerhead. Also wash the shaft that the impellor sits in - make sure that is ultra clean. That's your problem.....
Also take the rubber underside off the filterhead and was that and inside that too.
I'm convinced that will make your filter work again.

I have a new filter!

I decided not to bother taking the chance with the Juwel one and I've bought a Fluval.

I've not put it together quite right as yet, I have sandwiched a load of the old filter material into the new filter and just got it into the tank fast as poss.

The water is now flowing again though I may need some more advice on my new hardware- what's this grey cog thing that fits or rather just sits in the top of mine- it keeps falling out! What's the point of it?

Just keep in mind that all filters and impellors need maintenence and checks. So just like your Juwel, if you don't check your Fuval, you will almost certainly run into similar problems.
Give your impellors and shafts regular checks and degunk them if and when need be.

It says on the box this one packs in if it needs maintainence?

Shouldn't be a problem, at least I can GET AT this one, the Juwel I was dangling torches into and everything- the tanks above arm level so it's difficult.

Yep and starts whirring and overheating and burning the motor. So if you don't realise it soon enough you have a dead powerhead again :/ don't wait for something to stop working to check it. It's just like a car or any piece of machinery - regular checks prevent nasty things from happening :)

i have had exactly the same problem mate. mine is a rekord 96 and my flow stopped for about a week unfortunately i didnt notice, my water became really stagnant. i could smell it in my living room. you need to rinse some of the clogged up sponges in some fish water taken from the tank and then maybe change the carbon pad and the wool pad.

take the power head apart and get an old toothbrush in insinde the head and clean the protruding pipe.

what a nightmare!!!make sure u keep ur eye on it!!

loads of love em x

definitely best to change it every week, and even then keep checking it. if the wool pad is blocked up then it will slow the whole thing down

You are right. I have always replaced my white pad on a weekly basis. I don't even bother rinsing that. It just goes in the bin.
The other sponges always get rinsed in siphoned tank water on a weekly basis. The blue sponges do not need to be replaced as long as they are not falling apart - but they certainly need to be cleaned and kept free of gunk and poo.
