Just Wondering, is Malachite Green

made from Malachite or do they just call it that because its green is similar to some malachite colours?

Hi..malachite green is a DYE and has no relationship to the mineral. The dye has anti-protozoal/medicinal properties hence it's use in the treatment of ich. SH

So I guess putting a chunk of Malachite in my tank wouldn't work as a preventative then

No..not at all. Besides..even if that did work that way, you'd never want to do that as you'd eliminate the weakest organisms and leave the worst behind. Always treat 'acutely' and not prophylactically. SH
