What got me back into fish keeping is my youngest daughter's interest. Because she's a 10 year old kid, I let her pick out some rather cringe-worthy decorations and lo and behold a clown loach got stuck in one. I know it happens but... why, oh why do companies producing this stuff have such disregard for the interior smoothness and complicated bends etc?

After much gentle shaking and poking and stressing the hell out of the little guy, he's free and the little castle thingy is in the recycling bin.

I totally understand. I my self also hate the fake decor like that... If you want, you can tell your daughter that the fake decor isnt good for the fish. Show her some natural tanks and see what she likes. I understand by the sound of it that she is in the "princess and castle stage", so it may be a little hard... But you must show her how to properly care for a tank, because right now she is sucking in tons of information at this age... (If you feel like I over stepped with that comment let me know).

Also, a clown loach? What tanksize do you have? I'm pretty sure they need a large tank...

No worries on overstepping... my daughter is not prone to princessy things but yes the cheesy fake castle and the ubiquitous treasure chest. The rest is lava rock and driftwood and mostly tolerable. I did make it a lesson in what we think looks cool may not be good for the fish.

Yes a young clown loach (two actually) both about 1-1/4". It's only a 10 gallon but I'm about to set up a 55 or possibly 75 for the fish that will outgrow her tank.

Ok, thats good to hear! I wish you all the best with her first fish. Good to hear that there is some natural decor in the tank.

Please take this in the spirit in which I offer it, as sound advice for the well-being of your fish, and to avoid disappointment to your daughter when this plays out.

First, all loaches are highly social fish. They must have a group, and I would never consider fewer than five of the species; with fewer than this, subordinate fish of the group will be harassed and other fish in the aquarium may be attacked particularly as the fish matures. This fish develops an hierarchy within the group once they are together, and usually (perhaps always, this has slipped my mind at the moment) a female is the alpha fish. Other subordinate fish will regularly interact with the alpha, and each other too, to maintain their hierarchy. This is not only absolutely essential for the health and well-being of the fish, it also provides the aquarist with some very interesting enjoyment.

Tank size is another issue; this fish, in a group of five, needs at least a 6-foot tank. It will attain 12 inches on average, though some report 16 inches; between 8 and 12 inches is normal in an aquarium. Growth from the 2 inch size often available in shops to 5 inches is quite rapid so the initial aquarium still needs to be large.

The above needs are programmed into the genetic makeup of this species. The fish "expects" these things, and without them it will not be in good condition, which means stress leading to further issues. I cannot tell you what to do with your fish, but I would suggest that under the circumstances, returning the lone loach would probably be the best course, and soon. There are other loach species that are significantly better for home aquaria, as they remain in the 2, 3 or 4 inch mature size depending upon species. All need a group.

Thats what I forgot to mention! Them being social... Yeah, definitely get some buddies for him

Oh Petco is all over the Sponge Bob decor. Her tank almost went that direction until I managed to break her spirit.
Yeah, thats what they target with decor, the kids. So that way they go: "Mom, dad! Can we get a tank and put this and this and this in there!" Luckily at my petsmart near us there isnt a lot of the cartoony decor. Its mostly fake rock structures and fake wood decor. So its un-natural, natural decor if that makes sense lol

Petco and Petsmart aren’t necessarily evil (or are they?) but they definitely cater to the novice and the kids. I mean, they have a lot of “pet” ground to cover, I get it, but her original tank came cracked and with a crappy fixed temp heater, which dropped 6-8° one day, then remained there. Then the cheesy filter has a flashing red light when it’s time to change the charcoal filter sack supplied, it’s flashed from day one, I removed the battery (I didn’t realize I had this much venting to do), anyway the people at the store were helpful in every way and quite apologetic. But… you know.

I look forward to hitting the better fish stores that specialize. They aren’t terribly close by unfortunately.

Yah, never trust any pet store employee. Basically, do your homework. I made the mistake if buying a 3.5g tank, not cycling and then getting a betta... Didnt last a month
