I just had a heater break in a tank.I didn't know immediately as the heater gaurd contained the glass.By the time I found it the temp had dropped and triggered the dreaded whitespot.Never had it this bad though in over 30 years of keeping fish.I changed the heater, got the temp up slowly and used medication - even so I have lost 4 Hyalobagrus Flavus, 3 Rams, 3 Farlowella , 1 brown ancistrus and devastatingly my L30 and my pride and joy L114. I'm gutted! So if anyone knows where theres any cheap L's - let me know.
Makes me wonder about putting audible temp alarms on all my tanks - anybody done it?

 oh that's terrible. Sorry for your mass loss. It must be dreadful.
I keep thinking I should get one of those "Hagen Aquaminder" things - they're not even that expensive on eBay.
But as I have two heaters in my tank, never thought it would be a problem if one failed and stopped functioning. But the other week, one failed and the shut-off broke. The temperature shot through the roof and the fish were *not* happy to say the least. As a result I lost 2 Angelfish and an L260.
So guess I really should get one of those Aquaminders....

They are a good idea but when you have 8 tanks it runs expensive.I think I'll have to get some though - its cheaper than replacing fish and less distressing.

Yeah - they're about £7.50 each on eBay and I'm sure you can get a discount on postage if you buy in bulk. Just think of the cost of any individual fish you might have to replace because of heater failure. Never mind a whole tank of catfish. A small price indeed to pay for prevention.

Sorry to hear of your loss. I just lost my Rubbernose to white spot along with 2 young clown loaches and 21 cardinal tetras.
