I just got some Java Fern but on loads of the leaves it has these brown lumpy dots going up the back of the leaves. They come of when I rub at them. What are these? Do they need to be washed off

If I remember correctly, they are fine and that's how the plant will propagate/reproduce.

They may be baby plantletts growing.

Can you get a picture. You can just leave them on there and they'll grow into new plants and when big enough you can pull them off :)

Ferns reproduce by spores. I'm thinking that's what they most likely are.

Cool I scraped some off will that harm the plant? I left the rest on when you told me what they were.

Nope they shouldn't. You should be seeing leaves growing out from them in a while :)

Yeah, as said, each of those dots will eventually produce a new plantlet. They are very cool to watch - growing roots and new little leaves unfurling out from under the mother leaf. :good:

ah thanks guys you're brilliant as usual. I love my new java fren it looks really nice in the tank
