Hello,

I just purchased a 10 gallon Hex tank and was wondering if anyone had some suggestions as to what kind if fish I should put in it...I've noticed that a lot of people say danios, but I don't really care for them..any other suggestions? Your help is appreciated. :D

Guppys, swordtails, platys, mollies...basically any of the livebearers so easily available. Or some tetras.

Hi Steph

:hi: to the forum.

Your choice is limited by the size of the tank.
Livebearers are a good choice for a new fish keeper.
You must ensure that your tank cycles fully before you fully stock your new tank.
Add two to three fish to begin with. Allow 6 weeks before adding any more fish.

If you look in you LFS, (local fish shop) to see which fish you like. They should be able to tell you if they will be OK in a 10 gall tank. If they are not fourth coming with the info. Post your choices here and we will be able to advise you if the selection is ok.

Thanks for your suggestions dogsby and dolphin. Swordtails seem kinda cool...maybe I will get some of those. Thank you.

i got 3 fighters (1 male 2 female) a ram, a gourami, 2 black neons, a blue neon and a glowlight in my 10 gal tank and they all seem to get on well and they all have lots of swimmy space

I acutally ended up getting 3 barbs, 2 tigers and a green barb. I will eventually get more after my tank cycles. I'm happy with my choice. They are hyper little fishies. Any suggestions on fish that are compatable with barbs? I saw some really pretty Hifin Black Tetras, do you think they would be ok with barbs?

I have my male swordtail in with 2 green barbs, he rules the tank. But i think its because he was in there by himself for awhile before i added the barbs.

Actually the swordtail chases the barbs all the time. Like I said he was the only fish in the tank for awhile, so I guess he thinks the barbs are moving in on his territory.

Hi steph..Welcome to the forum :D ...Just a word of caution...with the 10 gal hex you don't have as much surface area as you would with a rectangular one, so it could cut down on the amount of fish you could comfortably keep :( ...anyways thats my 2 cents...have fun and enjoy your fish :D

Cory's. make it Cory's the best addition to any tank. I had a large shoal of 50 in my tank and once I've got rid of the Marines, I will go for 50 again. They truly are the ideal fish, peacefull, small, active. In a 10 gal a small shoal of 3-4 would be ideal.

3 or 4 corys along with 5 or 6 (eventually) barbs...will that be too may to have in one tank?

steph,

it would be slightly overstocked but with good filtration and some live plants it really should not be an issue. many of us are running overstocked (even though it is bad )

Thank you Tanked. I am really enjoying my barbs, :D I may just get some more barbs and not put anthing else in with them...I haven't decided yet. BTW, how long should it take after I put my fish in for ammonia levels to start rising?
