Just done a water change

Ive just done a water change of 50% in my new tank because yesterday the ammonia reading was 0.25 and the nirite was still also 0.25.I sucked the gravel and changed the water,put aqua safe in the new water and added a few more gravel stones (washed them alot before and washed them in aqua safe water also) put new water in tank and added anti-white spot solution (one fish has a few spots on her tail).I done the water tests again an hour later and the ammonia was 0,nitrite 0.25, ph 7.5, nitrate 40. I cant seem to shift the nirite is this normal? or is it in my tape water? .Its day 4 and All fish are healthy, interested in everything and constantly looking for food (greedy buggers) and also ripping the plants to pieces .

It "could" be your tap water. Have you test the water straight from your faucet? Test that and report back with the results.

Your tank still isn't cycled. It'll take over a month for your nitrIte to read 0 if you are cycling with fish. Your ammonia also hasn't gone down yet. Keep up water changes. Every other day for the first couple of weeks and then whenever nitrIte gets too high from then on. Eventualy your ammonia and nitrIte should permanently be at 0. NitrAtes will fluctuate and as they go up you must do a weekly or so water change and keep them under 40. Read the link in my signature.

I will keep up the water changes and keep testing the water. I was told i could have 8 platys in my tank and 2 sukas an 2 other small fish which go in a pair ,i realy need the sukas soon for the alge that will build up eventually,but if i cant have anymore fish than that in my tank then it doesnt matter realy,in a year i will get 4 times the size i have today and then my platys will have some freinds.

If you want something to control algae and scrubbing the front glass isn't an option (magnet cleaners work well), take back some platies and after you cycle and everything is stable, if you see signs of algae, add a couple of otos. They are fragile though so you MUST make sure your tank has cycled, stabilised and you are not over-stocked if you wan't to get any. Otherwise, a snail or some algae-eating shrimp can be good for controling algae. Regular water changes, not over-feeding/over-stocking and keeping light to a minnimum (especialy direct sunlight) is usualy enough to keep algae from growing. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I cant part with any of my fish,not now , i love all of them. I am going to keep them and soon they will get a bigger home,they seem happy and lively.I will keep checking and everything they will be fine with me.
