I always run a powerhead canister filter in my main tank as well as the 205.

That way i can provide seeded media for other people, starting other tanks quickly and help with other peoples filter emergencies.

It is also great for running in a large plastic container when transporting fish

I thought you were asking if you took a filter from a cycled tank and put it on a new tank if you would be good. Didn't know you were talking about just taking a little of the media!

Since he isn't going to use all of the media, he will have to do a very small cycle. And it will only last for about a week, then he will have enough bacteria.
