hi, first of all im new so a big hello to you all. Recently i was given a quite small fish tank + fish as the previous owner could no longer look after it. the tank also had a leak :unsure: so the first thing i done was buy a secondhand 4ft (50 gallon) tank. i had to put the little fish in because of the leak and they were very uncomfortable in a small tank. i had read about cycling so had a rough idea on what to do. i decided to put the filter and media into the new tank and some of the water to bump start the cycle. i have been doing a few tests to see if all is well and it seems ok. all the fish look well and love the space. the water is slightly green but i hope this will go?

anyway its been about a week since the transfer and i have done some tests that i would like to run by you to get your opinion on the situation. results are as follows:

PH = 8
Nitrite = <0.3mg/l
Nitrate = 25mg/l
sorry i dont have an ammonia test kit :blush:

the fish are:-

3x rainbow chiclids about 2.5inches in length
2x golden gourami about 2inches
2x sailfin plecos one is 8inches and one is 11.5inches

im going to do a 50% water change to get rid of the nitrates :good:
so what do you guys think?

Whats your tap nitrate readng looks like its nearly cycled to me.

Thats fine then, not long to go, a couple of days.
Good luck.

please dont put all those fish back into the small 10gallon tank
no wonder why the guy couldnt keep up with it

the 2 plecos alone where pushing the tanks limits far beyond its capacity, and then he had 5 other medium sized fish

the new tank should be fine as its pretty much cycled now

I know, the 11inch pleco could hardly move anywhere but they are all fine now with what must feel like a mansion to them :rolleyes:
