Hi all,

I just bought the most beautiful Pleco I've ever seen but have no idea what he is. I can't take a pic at the mo. as he has just got into the tank and is hiding so I want to let him settle in.

I will tell you all i know about him and if you could just suggest a few possibilities that i could google so i can find out what he is. Ok so here goes.

1. He's black and white
2. He has quite similar markings it an L046 Zebra Plec (but obviously isn't one!!) he has thick bold black lines and thick white lines.
3. The store had him for sale as a butterfly pleco?!?!?
4. Apparently he grows to a maximum of 12cm
5. i got him from maidenhead aquatics for £12.50

Any suggestions of what it could be so I can google and see if I can get an ID?!?

Thanks

No, lines are straight and bold. May end up having to take a photo. I had another look at him and his lines aren't really like a zebra plec they're horizontal. he looks similar to a clown plec but i dont think he is one, he has more white on him and they had other plecs labelled as clown plecs and they weren't as nice as him they were more brown.

Thanks for the reply though :good:

I've just tried to get him and it's impossible, I have a lot of plants and bogwood in my tank and until he comes out to the front there's no chance :/ should of asked at the LFS what he was but i guess i thought the chances of them actually knowing were pretty slim!

Could be either L134 (Leopard Frog Plec) or L052/168 which are often called butterfly plecs.

(and I think she means vertical not horizontal)

Ohh this is hard, could be the L134 but his stripes are horizontal from head to tail whereas the L134 has kind of squiggles near its head. I think maybe even if you manage to ID him I wont know if it's the same because their markings seem quite different within each species. I'm waiting for him to come out long enough to get a pic. :shifty:

Thanks so much for the help guys. Will keep trying for a pic.

do you mean horizontal like this ____ or vertical like this l l

Horizontal ___

Actually you know what, I've been looking at some more pics of the l134 and I think that's what he is. I will post some pics when he comes out of hiding just to confirm. It's just he has very neat straight lines but i've seen a couple of l134s with straighter markings like his.

Thank you!

Cool, you confused me saying 'not that like a zebra' and 'bit like a clown plec' thought you may have mixed up your stripes sorry!

134's are lovely, I'm getting some in June :)

agree with Indigo's guesstimates at this point, L15 another possibility as well.

should be easy to tell if its Peckoltia (L134, L15) or Dekeyseria (L052/L168) the latter have a much flatter profile than the former. L134 or L15 has a relatively high head in comparison, quite similar to a clown in fact
