After my previous thread about undergravel filtration we decided to go for a bigger internal filter, as thats a more efficient filtration system.

So, we currently run the Fluval 2plus....and we've now bought the Fluval 3plus....

So we know the filter is reliable etc, but its just bigger, and the old ones does 400l/h the new ones does 700l/ph. Nice.

The question being, how do we make the transition from old filter to new filter?? Run both pumps at once? Or just put the "old" pads in WITH the new pads so the new ones gather the bacteria quicker??

HELP!

i've always run them together when i get new filters, but i suppose you could put the filter media in the new filter & it would do the same thing i suppose :dunno:
i've always run the new filter for 2 weeks before even thinking of taking the old 1 out in the past if i take them out its always useful to have 2 in there just in case you ever need a cycled filter quick for emergancys

yeah that should be fine, i've just cloned a tank using 2 filters from my 126litre & 55litre tanks & put them both in the 270litre tank with all the fish & water stats are fine no problems at all. the 270 also has its own filter as well.
only did it because most of my fish were in the dining room & i couldn't see them while i'm sat on here lol

I agree with Trace1
Either run the old and new new filter togheter / alongsid each other - 2 weeks should do for "safety" sake. Then remove entire old filter but check water readings (preferabley daily for a week) just to make sure it didn't start a mini cycle.

Or take all filter media from old filter and place in new filter - and top up with new media. Remove old empty filter. Bob's your uncle ;)
