Firstly, I am not trolling, spoiling for a fight, I am just interested in other peoples opinions :)

Fish being given away as prizes (think fairground fish), is this right or wrong?

However what if a specialist aquatics shop was giving away a fish as a competition prize? is this right or wrong?

Personally I think both are wrong, fish shouldnt be used as a prize no matter what the circumstances. Just interested in others opinions. :)

Not a big fan of funfair fish for prizes, when I was like 10 we won a goldfish at a stall and it actually lived quite a while, still not convinced its a great idea.

As for a LFS/aquatics shop - maybe its a promotion - like any retailer - 1,000th customer wins a free ....... could be to drum up interest.

As long as its a responsible, aquatics shop abiding by the rules then fair enough.. Surprise me if they do this still though

I guess at least a specialist aquatics shop will be giving a free fish to someone who has come to the shop and is likely to be interested in fish keeping or even have their own tank already, whilst fish from a fun fair are won by people playing on a whim with, in some cases, no real thought about what they're going to do with their "prize".

Unless the fish comes with an instruction manual, fish shouldn't be given out as random prizes.  Even at an LFS, if the prize is random, there's really no way of knowing if the winner is prepared to keep and care for the fish unless that fish also comes with an aquarium kit complete with cycled media.

However, if the fish is a prize in a "best aquarium something" contest, that seems acceptable, because the new owner presumably already knows what they're getting into.

I would go with a blanket ban; no animals as prizes; not ever.

Give plants, a lifetime supply of food, even tanks/cages etc, but not animals.

Hmm, funfair prizes of goldfish are a absolute no no for me.

I remember my friend won one once a long time ago and the bag burst while we were walking home and the goldfish obviously died, but looking back, think that was actually a kind and more humane death  as my friend would not have looked after the goldfish well at all, just stuck it in one of these death bowls and then forget all about it after a while.

LFS giving prizes of fish for whatever reasons like "Best Kept Aquarium" or anything like that as Fluttermoth said, is not really a good prize at all to be honest, fish food or a new tank or equipment would be much more worthwhile in my opinion.

No for me in almost every circumstance.
The only way I can think of that it would be acceptable is something my LFS is having.

You spend a certain amount of money and receive a raffle ticket, then put the ticket into a cup that is connected to what prize you'd like.
I'd think that by having it this way, if someone was not ready for the fish, then they'd (at least hopefully) choose a non-live prize, such as a tank or food.
