I have my Ray in my bedroom and she is becoming quite a pain. For some reason at night and early in the morning(4-5 AM) she starts jumping up the sides of the tank and trying to pretty much swim her way up the glass. It sounds like someone slapping the water very fast with there hand. She is driving me crazy and keeping me from getting a good nights sleep......for about a month.

Why does she do this and what the hell can i do to make her stop? If she doesn't knock it off soon I'm gonna get rid of her.

I have a fish that does this too but haven't been able to pinpoint what one it is.

I'm guessing as its a ray the tank isnt planted so that would tend to rule out a CO2/Oxygen inbalance.

It could be that in the dark it cant see the glass and is geting confused. Maybe try putting a moon light on the tank and seeing if this helps (I have heard of people having to do this with big fish that keep swiming into the glass when its dark). I dont know if rays are nocturnal but if they are this could make the problem worse as well.

Thanks for the input but it's got to be something else as she does it even before i turn her light out at night.

Rays often do this, seemingly just for fun. Theres nothing you can do to stop it.

Every ray we have had has done this, same as swimming in the flow from the filter outlets and gliding over everything, and I know most others do it too.

Thats why we dont have tanks in the bedrooms

I've seen rays in massive research aquariums do this. I also saw a brat kid give him a french fry!

As many members have already said this is just what rays do. Must fill good to them as many of mine do it day and night. Id suggest moving tank or selling the ray. Did you research the behaviour of stingrays before putin in a room next to your bed? I guess not or you would have known you would be in for no sleep hehe :hyper:

Could you not insulate the hood against sound? It would at least muffle it a bit. You could also, try night time feeds. When he 'slaps' on one side of the tank, drop some food in the other side, or alternatively, you could encourage the least annoying part of teh behaviour, when he slaps at the glast furthest from where you sleep, drop food for him... Finally, a friend of mine had skitish fish, and used to leave a small portable tv on in front of the glass, with the sound muted, to distract them....
