What exactly are Julii cory cats? and how big do they grow? I just purchased 4 of them (I'm a slave to spontanious buys ), and I just realized I have no clue how big they get, I currently have the 4 of them in my 29 gallon with 1 peppered cory cat, are these the exact same corys? They look very similar but I'm still not sure... Any help with these little guys would be great.

PS... Not sure if this is in the rigth thread if not could somebody move it to the right one? Thanks

A really good way to stress and kill multitudes of fish is buying them when you don't know a thing about them.

Wow, lose the atitude you jerk. I'm doing research on them too so you know... Common sence isn't something you posses is it?

a little harshly phrased maybe, but not far off the truth sadly, fair enough cories are pretty easy to keep and peaceful but a lot of very unwise purchases are made from spontaneous buying.

there are many different cory cats, they're all roughly the same, get to 1-2" bottom feeders, like to be kept on sand not gravel, need a very clean tank floor and like company so you should have 6 of them. they're peaceful and a lot of fun.

i'd get 1/2 more cos they're appreciate being in a bigger group.

it can be really hard to resist impulse buys sometimes, we all do it. I'd recommend you buy a decent fish book with a lot of species info etc in, and you can take it with you when you go fish shopping, that way if you see something you like you can look it up before you buy it. :good:

Hi mate, I'm pretty new to this site and have found some people on here more critical than helpful to us newbies, which is quite bad cos if they really care for fish they would just advise you and not put you down when trying to enjoy your new hobby. we all make mistakes. you only have to look at certain threads to see that most people on here have messed up at some time. it's a big learning curve and a lot to take in when starting out, if we did'nt care we woul'nt come on this site in the first place....Rant over   :hyper:

I have also just bought 4 juli cory cats as well. My LFS told me they can grow up to 2 and a half inches they scavange the bottom of the tank and seem ok in a four. :good:

Happy new year Brads :good:

Thank you for personally attacking me. I really do enjoy it when people who should know better take offense on common sense advice.

"Hey guys i bought 6 bala sharks for my 8 gallon betta tank, i just had to buy them coz their so cute and i'm impulsive"
"Why did you buy them if you knew nothing about them"
"u r a jerk lolz"

Although worded a tad harshly InaneCathode is pretty correct the only time you should even think of a spur of the moment buy is with a fish you know the aggressive levels and projected size and attitude of...I research so many fish all the time I have a reasonable general knowledge on alot of the common and slightly less common Tropical fw fish and I will not buy spur of the moment fish unless I know at least it's projected size & aggression levels and water specs... Also best to ask the employee's of the local aquarium or pet shop about the fish if you know absolutely nothing on it but feel you "must" buy it, although not always right you have the advantage of if you bring it home and it's completely the opposite they should give a refund

First off, all corries are alike in care requirements, I was asking about water conditions and sizes you jack ass, I have delt with corries for many years and you come in here acting like you know every detail on fish yet still not willing to offer advice to somebody. Here's an idea for you mate, Release some tension by hitting a punching bag and don't take out your frustrations on people on this site who are just here to learn. Like what brad said, it seems many people (such as Inane) enjoy being more critical than helpful... Inane man learn to recognize when somebody needs some help with a topic and don't be so harsh next time, they may just be nice and not snap back at you for being a jack ass

I agree with Fish Crazy that inanecathode was being harsh, there was no need for such bluntness!!!

Wow! Can you feel the love?

Impulse buying Corys is no bad thing if you have kept some before. I think different types do mix, but maybe your single Peppered could with some more of his own type.

I agree... so I'll probably end up getting a few more peppered corries and get 8 in total in the tank :D Cycling is almost complete already I'm giving it till Friday to be safe :D

Thank you, again, for attacking me. This time i'll take it up with the proper moderator.

I'd like to know the main cause of death for all of these fish:
Green spot puffers
Bala sharks
Bettas
Goldfish
Dragon gobies

I'll bet a large sum of money the source for alot, if not most of these fish is people buying them when they have no idea what they require. ie, impulse buys.

You say you've dealt with cories for many years, yet you don't know anything about these ones? That doesnt sound like years of experience to me, and your language suggests you're not nearly old enough to have years into anything.

though i have not reared any julii cats before, their rearing difficulty i would just give them 1 out of 10.i have seen my friends reared them before, but no matter. Here's wishing you the best of luck to you and your cories.

to inane:
Pls be kinder to other ppl here in this forum, or any other forum.Didn't you think ppl who didn't cared about their fish would come here in the first place?I know of thousands of ppl who had reared a certain species of fish but did not know of a certain strain for almost their whole life.Again, i'm begging you to be much kinder to other people in this forum and other forums.

Sincerely hoping you would change your values,
J'rey

woah, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning  But seriously its not funny, you say people are "personally attacking" you but you kind of asked for it dude by jumping on Fishkrazy1, and if you think that these people are personally attacking you over the internet then good luck in the real world

Anyways, yeah as said they are almost definitely c. trilineatus, the "true" julii is very rare. They are bottom feeders, so get some sinking food for them, they also appreciate the occasional treat such as bloodworm and the like (frozen or live, they dont mind) they are peaceful community fish and shouldnt be kept with anything too big and/or aggresive, fin-nippers are also a no-no. Make sure you clean the substrate well as they can be prone to bacterial infections and I would not suggest putting them on anything other than very rounded gravel or sand as this can wear down their delicate barbels very easily but youve got them now so theres not much we can do about that, apart from i would suggest you change the substrate if it is too coarse. These fish are often considered as "clean up crew" but you cannot assume that they will be fine by just eating whats left over of what other fish eat, they need a varied, balanced diet for themselves.

Good luck with them, theyre great fish.
