Hello all, I'm having issues with two cory catfish, one died three days after I bought it, and the other is on its way out today, nine days after I purchased them. My tank is a twenty high and water parameters are:
Ammonia: 0 ppm
Nitrite: 0 ppm
Nitrate: 5 ppm
pH: 7.8
KH: Between 4 and 5 degrees dKH
GH: 53 ppm
Water Temp: 74 degrees
I have fluval stratum substrate which I have been fighting to remove its KH buffering abilities by dosing the tank with KH carbonate for plants(aquavitro), but have stopped because I've noticed my pH was rising. It has been stable since I've stopped. I also dose aquarium co-op's easy green fertilizer for my plants, bacopa caroliniana, chilensis sag, and a mini amazon sword. The sword has a root tab buried with it as well. I have a finnex planted+ 24/7 cc for the lighting. Two large malaysian driftwood pieces and three dragonstones about the size of fists.
My filtration is with just a standard penguin 100 HOB filter with carbon filter media.

When I got the two Julii cory catfish, my tank had been cycled to show 0 ammonia and nitrite. The only things alive in the tank were pond snails from the plants that I must not have washed thoroughly enough. The first cory was fine until 3 days in it started to barrel roll, and spin and get itself pushed around by the current and caught in plants. I tried a 6 minute dip in temperature acclimated tap water that was not dechlorinated, as I did not have any medications and thought it may have been bacterial, but the fish passed. Now 6 days later, the other cory I added is displaying similar issues, but a little modified. He is pretty clearly leaning right, with his left side up, and even goes vertical or upside down at times. It seems he goes from floating at the surface to mid water, to back on the bottom very frequently. I believe both fish had some kind of problem with their swim bladders, but it's not clear what may have caused this issue.
I'm feeding the cory that is still around piscine energetics 1mm slow sinking pellets as the cory wafers I got from petco were too big and would just get stuck under some of the hardscape where they couldn't get to it.
There are no other fish in the tank, I know cory's prefer to be in groups of 6 or up but I didn't want to add 6 fish right away to my newly cycled tank.
Did I do something wrong or did my LFS sell me two fish with bacterial infections?
Thanks for any responses!
