Alright well let me start out by explaining. While my girlfriend was in Italy for the semester, she left me her betta to take care of. Well, while in my care "Baxter" died. I told her that when she came home I would get her a new betta and a proper set up for it (she had it in a small bowl). I was thinking something like a 10g tank with a divider and a betta on each side of the tank. Well since she's been home she's been really liking my tank and I suggested that we get her a 10g tank and set it up with fish that are nicer than bettas (I know most people like bettas, but to me they are just lazy and kind of dumb fish). Well she took to the idea, and I decided that maybe she could have my tank and i'd look for a 20g long that I could set up. Well last saturday (June 10th), an awesome local fish store here in Pittsburgh, called Elmer's Aquarium was having their monthly used equipment sale. Well me and the girlfirend decided to get there just before they opened (they opened at 10a, we got there at like 9:50). We didn't expect anyone to be there but there was a line waiting at the door. Apparently this thing gets pretty popular. Well as we went in people were already standing by tanks and things that they wanted to buy. Well I spotted a 20g long tank with the wood trim rather than the black marked for $14! So I took the icket off of it and bought it. I also bought a used 150w heater for $10 and an aquaclear 50 for $10! My girlfriend bought some rocks and background for like $2. It was an awesome sale. There were so many tanks for cheap. I saw a 30 gallon tank with an oak stand and hood for $70! There was a 55g tank for like $45. Lots of cool stuff. Well when I got home I dismantled my 10g tank and took the filter media from my other filter and put it in the new 50. I also used the old water and filled the new tank up the rest of the way. It was very bare and I didn't know how I wanted it to look, but I had some lava rocks that I wasn't using and put them in just to give it some type of hardscape. Well I decided that i liked how they looked and I figured out sort of what I wanted the tank to look like, so today I went to All Oddball Aquatics here in Pittsburgh, and I bought 2 balls of java moss, to cover the rocks with, and 3 blyxa japonica plants. this tank will be Ei, so everything should grow well. I've been inspired a LOT by Takashi Amano and friends, as well as the guys and Creative Aquascape Union, so that's sort of the look that i'm going for. The moss didn't quite cover all the rocks, but I'm hoping that once it grows and I give it a trim, I'll have enough for the other rocks. I'm gonna get some more blyxa and probably some type of val for the background, and possibly do a glosso carpet along the front, or maybe something like hc. This picture was taken tonight. Oh btw I added 4 guppys to the tank, and there are 2 dwarf lilly bulbs floating around. Not sure if i'm keeping them in this tank or not yet. Thanks for looking, and please comment and critique.

Oh and this tank will have the background painted in a few weeks. I'm going to paint it black. I was going to do it tonight, but I just got too busy. That's why you can see the filter and all of the cords and tubing.

sweet, where'd u get those rocks?

Elmer's aquarium in monroeville. They were like $1.25/lb. They're just run of the mill red lava rocks. I've seen them at a lot of fish stores.

Like the rock formations, not necessarily the colour ;) but the shapes are nice :)

yeah I don't really like the color of the rocks either, but I'm hoping that the java moss will take over and then they'll be green and i'll still have the nice formations :D

Alright a slight update. I recently bought a coralife freshwater 65w cf light for this tank and let me tell you, it is BRIGHT! It looks great on the tank. I also bought 4 otocinclus cats for this tank to help control algae. These guys are great little algae eaters. Rotala was purchased at the same time as the otos and I realy like it. From what I'm told, it should grow great and very dense, but I'm not sure. Can anyone id what type of rotala I have? It's doing great though, some of it is already pearling (Just a little bit)! Even with DIY Co2!

Here's a full tank shot:

Here's a pic of my pearling:

Nice pics :) The red of the rock has toned down and bit which is good IMO, and the moss over the top looks great

Congrats on the pearling, I got very excited when my plants first started to pearl!

Alright well I don't know how many of you were actually following this thread, since it's like 7 posts long, but in the beginning of July the tank sprung a leak and everything had to be taken back to the lfs, seeing as how I didn't have the time or money to put into setting up a new tank and reestablishing everything.

The other day, however, I picked up a new 20L and filled it with 2 bags of eco-complete, giving it a nice 2.5" layer of substrate. It's currently cycling, but I will update as soon as I have plants and everything is going!

Finally time for an update! The tank has been up and running for about 3 weeks now. I have planted it very densely and everything seems to be growing well. It has Rotals sp., 2x rosetti swords, cabomba carolina, some kind of star burst plant or something, java moss atatched to the lava rocks, and dwarf hairgrass. As soon as I can get to all oddball aquatics, I'm going to pick up some blyxa japonica and plant it in the midground, behind and around the lava rocks. I'm hoping that with my 65w 6700k lighting and DIY Co2, the dwarf hairgrass will carpet well. I also added a rhinox 1000 Co2 diffuser today, so hopefully it will give me a good Co2 ppm. Alright well on to the pictures. C&C welcome!!!! Thanks! -Brad

I forgot a stock list.

7x scissortail rasboras
4x rummynose tetras
5x oto's
Just a few ghost shrimp.

i found after i planted my hairgrass, i cut it back to about 2cm high and it went fairly nuts spreading around.

Thanks 2Polypterus and madacow! I'm going to have to try cutting back the grass. I separated those plants from 2 potted plants, and I think they were grown emersed, due to the little "seeds" on top of the grass. Hopefully cutting them shorter will help them carpet!
