I figured that since I am fairly new, that I'd post tank journals of my two tanks (20g and 10g), so that you all can see where I am now. A little info. I got the 20g tank this Christmas from my girlfriend. It was the all-glass 20g kit from a lfs. The first thing I did was let it run for a week, fishless cycling it. After a week (I know, too early), I added 6 zebra danios. The danios did good so I started adding more fish slowly over a few weeks. I eventually had 6 zebra danios, 1 common pleco, 3 pearl gouramis, and 3 gold gouramis. I don't have any good full tank shots from that time, but here are a few random ones:

Everything was going good, aside from the tank being hugely overstocked. I decided to add a few more rocks to make it look better.

I bought some aponogeton bulbs at the local wal-mart and they started to grow nicely. Here's a shot of one of them growing.

After reading on this site a lot and going to the local lfs (Elmer's: awesome store btw) I decided to get some ghost shrimp. Only a few survived the feeding frenzy. This big one was one of the few. You can also see my aponogeton growing.

I added some Wisteria in the back right corner and replanted my aponogeton bulbs to the back of the tank.

Well once again after reading on this side I decided I eventually wanted to go fully planted, and I loved the idea of sand, so I changed out the disgusting blue gravel for some play sand with a layer of flourite underneath it. I also bought a few more plants (I think they were all cabomba at this point aside from my bulbs), and took out all of the fake plants.

Well, terror then struck the tank and the gold gouramis started attacking everything. They first attacked and killed all 6 danios, some of which i witnessed, but didn't have time to do anything about. Then they started attacking the pearl gouramis, so after one got killed, and before the other two got killed, i took all 5 gouramis that were left back to the lfs. So i was left with a pleco.....
Well I went to the store and bought some anacharis and planted my tank more, and I also decided that my sand was WAAAAY too deep so I thinned it out. I also bought 10 neon tetras at this time and added them to the tank after assuring parameters were set. Oh there were 2 larger ghost shrimp left in the tank as well. Here's a shot at that point.

I have to get more updated pics, but the tank currently has no more lava rocks, a large piece of driftwood, the plants are growing like crazy. I have DIY CO2 running in the tank and have thinned out the sand even more.
Fish stock consists of 8 neon tetras (2 dissappeared shortly after they were all added and I still can't figure out anything but that the pleco ate them). I also have 2 bolivian rams, and 4 cories. Two of the larger ghost shrimp are still alive too. I decided that the pleco would outgrow the tank before I could update and recently took him back too. I'll get current pics of the tank ASAP. I apologize for the poor picture quality. Thanks for reading!

Well, thats much better, it certainly beats plastic plants and blue substrates........good job!

Thanks for the replies! I agree that it does look much better than when I started, and it has gone very fast, seeing as how I've only had the tank a little over 4 months. It's kind of kept me sane though, seeing as though my girlfriend has been in Italy since the beginning of February, and I barely made it through last semester! Alright well here's a pic that I just took about 5 minutes ago:

Wood looks much better than the rocks! A big improvement over fake plants and blue gravel as zig pointed out. That was a bit

What lighting are you running on the 20g? It looks like a 20g high to me, which I've got one of those laying around in Miami.

Good job! :)

Thanks! The tank is a 20H. Lighting is 1- 15w flora-sun florescant bulb, which is being updated in the next few days I hope, as this tank's plants aren't doing nearly as well as my other tank's plants. I was thinking about getting one of these:

Does anyone know anything about this lighting set up? Any help is appreciated!

Great price, might be overkill! That's like 5.5WPG, which is pretty sweet for a SW setup, but probably a bit much for your tank, especially with only DIY CO2. You would most certainly need to have pressurized CO2 with that kind of WPG and some regimented fertiliser dosing to prevent algae with that amount of light. I haven't passed the magic 4WPG yet, I may with my 36g but it's a larger tank than yours and the extra wattage will be concentrated in the foreground to grow my lawncover. I also have two CO2 units and dose using the EI method to compensate. Not sure, I'd wait to see what others say before you buy. My gut says no, unless you were plannning on growing some nice corals! :)

...and since I won't be growing any corals any time soon (at least not while I'm still in college), I may have to go with one of these instead. The seller has very positive feedback, so it's probably all legit. Any thoughts?

Thats a hell of an improvement! I can fully apprecaite that some people like bright coloured gravel, etc, and each to their own, but for me the simplisity (and diversity for that matter) of natural colours can't be beaten.

That's more like it! :good: Be sure about the color temperature of the bulb. Some people here can grow plants very well with 10,000K, but the more usual color temperature is between 6500-6700K. But bulbs are easily replaced. This will give you about 3.25 WPG, which is still high-tech, and you'll be able to grow almost anything, especially if you have good DIY CO2 and consider EI fertilization to avoid algae. Read the pinned article on EI. It can be confusing. Sam (Themuleous) had to read it a gazillion times before he got it! :p

I was just looking at your tank again, and watch your anacharis/elodea/egeria densa, the leaves are starting to look brownish on the bottom. It could be just your lighting in your picture. When anacharis decomposes, it is arguably one of the most disgusting things ever. Very yucky. Your're far from that stage, but I'd watch. It's just that egeria densa (scientific name) does better in cooler temperatures and that is maybe what I'm seeing with the decaying leaves. In your 10g as well. It doesn't do as well in a tropical aquarium.

If you like egeria/anacharis species, I highly recommend Egeria najas, which is more delicate looking, but no less hardy, and adapts better to warmer, tropical tank conditions. Here is the profile, but you obviously pick the plants that you like. Just trying to be helpful.

what if you go with the coralife fluorescents at bigalsonline? Like what lljdma recommended to me? It would be 2wpg and easier to maintain.

just search "coralife f/w" on bigals and you'll see it. What are the dimensions on your tank anyways? I'm using the 30"

a little update.
i ordered the second light from the guy who's ebay link i posted....the 65 watt one.... Well, he said that he was currently out of them, but he would give me the 110 watt one for no extra charge. I agreed and it's currently in the mail. I figure what I'll do is take the actinic bulb out and just use the one 10000k 55w bulb until I can get a new bulb for it. Does this sound good? If I use just the one 55w, it will give me 2.75wpg. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Looks lovely, amazing difference. Also, I should point out that you're going to want to get rid of that common pleco. It will get very huge.
