Anyone else got Jewel Tanks, with the internal filters

I got a sun catfish last week, put him in one of my jewel tanks, checked a day or two later, and I couldnt find him, when I lifted the lid, he was on top of the white filter medium inside the filter dead

My guess is that he jumped into the filter, got stuck and died

Anyone else have this problem, and how can i do something about it, to stop it happening again short of silicon sealing some plastic to make it higher so fish cant jump into it and get stuck!!

I've found live fry swimming around in mine on a few ocassions, i've never had a fish get stuck though :/

I made a thread last week or so....

One of my Male Mollies went missing, i looked everywhere for him, and unfortunately the filter was the last place i did look, and he was dead :-( He must have jumped in there and couldnt get out :-(

There was a discussion about the design etc, as this has happend to a few people, and someone actually wrote to Juwel, but they said, yeah it happens... :grr:

Yeah, me too!!

One of my danios had found its way in there after only 2 hours of being in the tank. Fortunately I noticed pretty soon and went looking for him. He had jumped into the side with the powerhead/heater, so had plenty of room to swim and I got him out fine [had to take the whole filter system apart to do so though!!].

I have found that placing 2 old plastic cards [credit card/library card etc] on top ofthe filter box works just fine, as you just lift them off to clean your filter media.

Very good Adam, I like that.

Ive always used Juwel tanks and have had a couple of blue tetras in but they had survived, I dont think they jumped in though, I think they swam into the little hole when I had the power head out for a clean.

I have a few red crabs that live in my filter on one Juwel tank, when I lift the lid off they are all peeking out the 2 small gaps in the filter cover where the wires come out, then they all disappear inside as soon as they see me like "quick....he is coming!"

ITs very annoying when I have to clean the sponges!

How do you get them out, or do they come out on there own once you lift the lid?

My juwell filter in my Rio 180 came with a black plastic cap for the top of the filter, I find that stops anything jumping in there.

It was me who emailed the jewel people, they weren't helpful at all. When it happened to me it was a neon tetra, theres a circular opening were the pump head thing comes out - the openings to big and small fish can fit through. My housemate made me a cover out of plastic which fills the gaps around the big circular exit. Other people when I said about this problem said they used nets, tights etc.. My neon tetra died about a week later :(

They tend to run down the back bit where the heater is if Im moving the filter sponges but they do spend time in the big tank aswell.....thats the first time any of mine have escaped but when I worked in aa aquatics years ago the florest next door, he used to find them huddled round the buckets of water, he used to bring them in all the time saying "is this yours?".

......he did come in the first time and said "do you have crabs?" but we just giggled like school girls and told him it was just the way we were standing....after that he used to just gather up any he fond and usually brought thenm through in his coffee mug......I hope he washed it after
