i have a reckford 60 and want better filtration.

i dont want to add another filter as this takes up space so i though maybe i could add a power head (or what ever its called that sucks the water through the sponges) from a bigger jewel tank.

which one would fit the reckford 60 without modding

cheers

I have the rekord 60 also and i think the stock filter does well for a small tank, ive added a small corner filter which pumps 450l/h that helps with oxygenating the water but apart from that i think the current filter does a good job.

I've read a few posts where people have removed the standard filter altogether (by using a knife to cut the fixings) and replaced it with a better aftermarket one.

debiasir: there's no need to remove the filter it does a pretty good job in itself, it's the circulation that is the problem.

take a look at this link for a simple diy upgrade.

really though you dont need to remove the filter box. mine's been set up for about 18 months now and working fine.

yep perfectly normal. basically the white filter takes out any particles of dead plant, fish poo etc floating around in your water. once the water has filtered through the white floss the remaining dirt free water passes through the blue biological sponges to do the nitrogen cycle thing. if anything you need to feed less or change the filter pads more often.

a good tip for you: go into your LFS and ask for a bag of white filter floss for a pond. you will get a rectangular slab of white filter floss about 2 foot long by 1 foot wide for about £3.50. you just need to cut off lumps as and when you need them to stuff in the top of your filter. those juwel refil pack will end up costing you loads in the long term.

oh and another tip, if you ever buy the carbon sponge (i dont use it) buy the ones for a rio 180 and cut them in half, they are exactly twice the width as the rekord 60 ones and when halved fit in perfectly. works out cheaper that way.

hope that helps
