If I push little bits of it into the gravel will it attach and grow? Would it spread out across the gravel? I've just pushed it in n places with my finger and put a bit of gravel on top.

Yes, it will attach to the gravel in time. The parts that are buried will die off but by that time it will be spreading out. If there is a lot of bright light on the substrate where you're putting it, it will form more of a carpet but if the light is insufficient, it may appear more stringy/thread like. I'm using light in this case as a very general example because this has been my observation of how it grows in my different tanks without suppling CO2 or fertiliser. Nutrient amounts and other factors will of coarse have an effect on the growth as well.
