Ahhch noooe! just found shriveled up java fern from last tank clean. Will it survive, it's been 7 days? Let me refrase that: are they known to be hardy and survive dry 'periods'?

there is only one way to find out . I think you'll be o.k. Java fern grows on river banks , some submerged and some get misted by water . I have found small plants beside my tanks days after cleaning . I just throw them back in the tank , If they're green you stand a better chance . My son and I probably have over 100 java fern plants between us big and small . It's easy to grow and very forgiving . Java is the best I.M.O

just let it float around in the water for now . Java fern grows on things , like rocks , wood , etc. and takes nutrients through it's leaves , if you plant it be careful not to burry the rhizome , which looks kind of like a root this should not be burried , it may rot and kill the plant . We use cotten string or rubber bands and loosly attach the ferns to whatever we want them to grow on[ some just float in the water ] , and in a few weeks they are attached by them selves .

r3gg , sorry I meant fern [ corrected]

I think Fish Buddy was talking about a Java fern - different to Java moss.

Java fern works the same way - I started off with few leaves worth of java fern, tied to a large 2 inch gravel. Within 9 months, they just kept multiplying, and now I have about 20 stones on which java ferns are firmly attached. Some of them are now placed in the malawi tank where you can't really plant any live plants. Its easier this way so that you can move them around without worrying about re-planting them.

They look pretty good when the leaves grow to 4 inches or so!

So a rhizome is different than the root system and helps with it or does it replace the root system entirely? How can you tell if you have buried it...?

Good cos i have some in the pipeline heading my way along with 36 other plants.

fish buddy have ever seen the plant clos eup if u look there is a green bar across the length of the plant that the leaves come from this is known as the rim zone. the roots come down under this

keep this clear and all will be fine
