Just got some java fern from greenline aquatics, just really long leaves attached to roots, and my concern is will it bush out ect, or will I just have a load of long "spindles" of fern?

Also if I trim the stems down to the required length will roots sprout from the end?

New leaves can grow form the rootstock aswell as new plantlets from the the leaves themselves just like terrestial ferns.

I would not trim, i would just attach to wood or stone and see how they grow. The only reaon i say this is that you want the plant to get a good start and Java fern isnt the fastest growing. I know in normal gardeing triming can encourage bushyier growth, new shoots to sprout, but i would wait until you kno rhis plant is settled and growing first.

Just make sure you don't bury the rhizome. It will rot. It does get bushy, with new leaves sprouting out of the rhizome, and the rhizome should get longer. It will grow new plants on the old leaves as it gets bigger, or you can separate it by breaking the rhizome in two. i agree with Sanj, though. I would just leave it be for now until it gets bigger. I like to leave my one plant large and use the plantlets for other areas. I don't have the normal java fern, though, I have the 'Windelov' variety. I believe they both act the same way. I love it and I'm going to get some of the regular variety as soon as I can find some, too! ^_^
