i am thinking about getting some java fern & moss. i have a 20 gal tank with no fish yet. are there any fish that will eat or kill the fern/moss? do i need special lights or filter? any additional info will be helpful.
Java fern is the upright leafy plant on the left in this picture. It can be grown easily with about 1 WPG of lighting.
Java moss looks like just so much mossy stuff. It does not require artificial lighting to grow. I have been growing lots of it in different tanks since last spring and it just keeps growing with the small amount of light that gets into a room with a small north facing window. With no artificial lighting it is also completely free of any algae. This is a clump in one of my tanks, the picture was taken before I learned to restrict the lighting in the tank to hold down algae. This picture also has a small java fern in the foreground attached to the wood. The large plant in the background is a purebred silk plant.
