i am thinking about getting some java fern & moss. i have a 20 gal tank with no fish yet. are there any fish that will eat or kill the fern/moss? do i need special lights or filter? any additional info will be helpful.

Java moss will grow in any with any light. Mine is doing great with 1wpg no ferts just fish. It will get food bits and stuff in it so clean water is a must you can wash it out. It loves cool temps. A little goes along way. It also does grow best when attached to rocks or wood.

Java fern is hardy slow grower. Will grow in any light. Also likes to be attached to wood.

Using fishing line you can make it grow on anything. I think it looks pretty cool if you have a cave made up rocks it you put it on top of the cave. Like snowflake said a little will go a long way. If you have to end up ordering it I would recommend looking on ebay theres some pretty cool deals on there some times.

you can also use thread if you don't have any fishing line available

Java fern is the upright leafy plant on the left in this picture. It can be grown easily with about 1 WPG of lighting.

Java moss looks like just so much mossy stuff. It does not require artificial lighting to grow. I have been growing lots of it in different tanks since last spring and it just keeps growing with the small amount of light that gets into a room with a small north facing window. With no artificial lighting it is also completely free of any algae. This is a clump in one of my tanks, the picture was taken before I learned to restrict the lighting in the tank to hold down algae. This picture also has a small java fern in the foreground attached to the wood. The large plant in the background is a purebred silk plant.

i had to take my java moss out when it took over my filter. i took it out about month ago and still finding bits attached to my filter. I would never use it again.

shouldnt the picture be in black and white than? lol, kidding

my java fern took a very long time to root and it died back 2 times, but its growing nicely now and it already making baby plants, my java moss took about a week to 2 weeks to grab hold of the bogwood but now its growing and spreading nicely, and it looks very nice, good for babies to hide in too
