The same thing happens to my java ferns too, and I know it cannot be because they get too much light. I keep corydoras and they would just as soon have subdued lighting. My tanks have cheap lighting and I use the tubes until they wear out. this is why I keep the ferns. No fertilizer other than what the fish provide.
What they do is make lots of baby java ferns, so I had been thinking they just reproduced and died. I'd be happy to learn if there is a way to keep them green and pretty for a longer time.
