Java Fern Help

The same thing happens to my java ferns too, and I know it cannot be because they get too much light. I keep corydoras and they would just as soon have subdued lighting. My tanks have cheap lighting and I use the tubes until they wear out. this is why I keep the ferns. No fertilizer other than what the fish provide.

What they do is make lots of baby java ferns, so I had been thinking they just reproduced and died. I'd be happy to learn if there is a way to keep them green and pretty for a longer time. :)

Thats the same as mine. They only reproduce and never grow..

Well I'm starting EI next week so hoping the ferts will sort thngs out. I'll update if I manage some groth :D

I have had the same problem and would love to know how to resolve it.

I think its becasue I dont dose with Ferts. I have 3 WPG Lighting with Pressurised C02 and still no joy :(

Err, no fertiliser at all? With 3wpg and CO2 you need to be adding pretty much everything, the Estimative Index pinned thread is a good start and is more than suited to such a high light tank. Loads of light with CO2 but no fertiliser is asking for nutrient deficiencies and algae :)

Never mind his problems, what about mine!! It's my thread, help me ;)
HAHAHAHA I'm sorry but that was so funny

the roots on java fern need to be out in the open. If you bury them the plant will die.

It looks like yours is burried in the sand

OK, so you're giving 'everything' it needs....

perhaps it is just diseased?

Andy

They look diseased mate. Remove the affected leaves and hopefully new healthy leaves will grow.

For the others - Java fern can't have too much light. I'm growing some very well in 3.6wpg HO T5 in a 65 gal. It also grows emerged in nature, so is used to much higher lighting than we can provide.

Now that you say they are diseased I think mine were too. The leaves in my larger tank look exactly the same, all the other plants were growing fine, I always wondered why I was failing with Java Fern.

Mine look the same and the roots fixed with linen thread to lava stones don't attach themselves since 3 weeks or so.

I got 6 plants in a 15G (60L) tank cycling since 4 weeks. The water is low-end brackish with SG 1.005 but Java fern should be well until SG 1.013.

There is no plant fertilizer. I only use AquaSafe water conditioner and marine salt.

The old leaves have turned brown. New leaves have emerged but turn brown, too. Only those offspring stalks or stems with those tiny leaves keep on being green. I let now one of the plants with small green newly emerged leaves floating on the water surface and it seems to do better.

There is one 15W fluorescent tube and it's about 80 Lux on the bottom of the tank, measured from outside. The roots are completely free, only the linen thread holds them against the lava stones.

Is there any cure for this?
