Japanese Trapdoor Snail

It looks like Japanese Trapdoor Snails are the best choices because they're not asexual so don't have to worry about reproduction out of control as long as you have one or the same sex. They're also one of those rare ones that don't eat plants much and yet still good at cleaning algae. Anybody with experience with these snails? Are they also adequate for cold or warm water aquarium? Sounds like most people keep them in outdoor ponds.
 
I have never had them last very long for some reason. They are coldwater and wont live long in tropical. Some say they prefer muddy water other say super clean. I think they do best in well filtered ponds with a lot of sediment on the bottom.
