We have recently bought 2 jaguar fish a mating pair . . . they are in a tank with an under gravel filter and a big filter pump aswell for circulation. We put them in a tank which had zebra fish in them to get the tank established and they ate them as soon as we put them in.
we were wondering if it is beneficial to feed them on just live fish, whether this is possible and if so how many, how big and what fish to feed them?

A diet consisting of nothing but feeders ins't healthy. I'm presuming you're on about jaguar cichlids, which are a central american cichlid so you will probably get a better responce in the New World Cichlid section.

A better diet for the fish would be a good quality pellet as a staple eg. hikari, new life spectrum etc. then as a treat earthworms, muscle, crickets, mealworms, silversides, prawns. If you feel the need to feed live fish, then make sure they come from a reliable, disease free source eg. ones you raised yourself. Store bought feeders are often riddled with problems that you don't want to pass onto your fish, at the very least quarantine them. Theres a good article sticky'd on the Predator section on Feeder fish - the pro's and cons by nmonks, its worthwhile reading.

Also jaguar cichlids get very large, a male can reach 16" or there abouts, needless to say they require a big tank. Not to mention they are very aggressive, if you have a breeding pair then any other tankmates arn't and option and watch out for the male beating up the female, sometimes even killing her. For a pair of jags you're looking at a 125 gallon MINIMUM.

live feeders are not good for them. use pellet foods like hikari bio gold and dainichi ultima or xl-pro
