There's a 10" jag looking for a home near me, but I don't want to take it on if it's going to harass my cats.

I've got a gibbi, one striped and one spotted talking cat and an unknown synodondits. The tank's 5'x2'x2', soft water.

The tank has a good amount of caves, a few plants, and the cats are rarely out during the day.

if the cats have cover and are all in excess of 4 inches and will ll max out at about 6 then i guess they could b OK i don't know much about cichlids but i know that jags get big and are no exception to the rule of cichlids begin aggressive

Its a really tough call to be honest, the tank may be big enough to work but the problem is the the jaws on a Jag and any of its relatives Dovii etc have such powerful jaws that if it goes for anything its in trouble...

I have seen Jags in issolation but I have also seen them in tanks with similar mates that you are talking about. And this is a great sized tank for one.

Do they have anything else in the tank with it? If so what kind of conditions are the other fish in? And have the staff mentioned why its been rehomed? Is it because the tank was too big or because they were being aggressive in the tank and if so what were they being kept with?

If you were to try it I would make sure that the tank had big areas of built up wood and rocks that the jag will be slowed down by and some areas he/she cant even reach. Big inteligent cichlids are such a joy to keep that I can see the temptation :)
