Jack Depmsey?

No they're not GT's, I would say Jewels, but never having kept one Im not sure the colour on the 2nd fish doesnt seem right

like i said in your first post i think jewels for the 1st one as it looks just like mine.

Am hoping to ID these fish soon, as they don't seem to be eating, while the rest of the Africans are much more active and eating more vigorously. One seems to "Rest" alot, not swimming just resting on a rock or the substrate, While the other Swims around some, but I haven't seen either eat. The are beautiful fish and I would like to see them prosper. The pictures are rather off as they are both the same color and appear Identical. The 1st fish pic is the best reference as far as coloring for both fish, I will try and get more pics tonight. Am offering a variety of food and they appear interested in any of it although they seem to survey they bottom for food and refuse to take anything floating....

Have had success in feeding. They seem to be fond of freeze dried baby shrimp....Could this pose a protein problem/bloat problem? No luck with Hikari Cichlid staple (floating type) or TetraMin Tropical Crisps, which rarely reach the bottom. They actually came halfway to the surface for the shrimp though....They are awesome looking fish and I appreciate all the help and advice I can get!

Well I think they are both Jewel cichlids, which are African cichlids.

How do I research Jewels? I am unsure as to the scientific name of Jewels....

Scientific name: Hemichromis bimaculatus, but just google Jewel cichlid and it will give you loads of information :good:

Have researched (well I am still researching) and would like to thank you all. It appears through a lil reading and picture looking to be Hemichromis guttatus. Thank you all for the advice and patience in my unfamiliarities with this species. Hopefully I will be able to keep these fish for a long time. Anyways, Off to do more researching!

The jewels have started eating more vigorously.....possibly the move when I bought them had something to do with the loss of appetite??? Either way, their color is improving, they are still a bit more shy than the others but are settling in!!! Thanks everyone!

oh so you bought them! thought you had them given since you said a friend gave you them you if you bought them you would know if they were jd or not
top tip research the fish before you buy it saves on heart ache and hassle

the fish are definitely a variant of the african jewelfish, Hemichromis sp. The problem with identifying the specific strain comes from all the interbreeding that occurs and mislabeling that takes place at the stores.
Most stores sell you H. bimaculatus, here in South Florida what we catch are H. letourneuxi, which looks closer to the fish in your picture.

this is what you can expect during breeding, if it's H. letourneuxi:

either way, treat as you would other african cichlids. My wild-caught H. letourneuxi loves eating Hikari Cichlid Gold, but also takes feeder fish, shrimp, frozen bloodworm, cichlid flakes, and pretty much anything small enough to look like food
