Don't be put off. Oscars are not at all hard to look after. You just need to keep the water well filtered and give the fish a good balanced diet. I've never kept discus but from what I understand they are very fussy about water quality and very expensive. I find them very dull to look at too once you've got over the colours. Oscars are full of life and make a good pet.

60G is fine for an Oscar. Some people on here take nonsense about 100G being the minimum but 55G is the generally accpeted minimum over at Oscarfish.com. If you need any more help check out the New World Cichlids here on TFF. Plenty of experienced keepers of Oscars and Discus.

Thank you, but my mum dosnt want them, mum uncle used to have them and he said they were okay, but my mum wants grass & plants and a clear tank and with a oscars you dont get any of them...............

so im going to get discus :)

thanks for you taking the time and giving me advise :)

NP. Best of luck. Post some pics when you've got your tank set up. Like I say, Discus are nice to look at :good:

never keeped discus been told very hard work i really like them good luck wld love to see a pic of set up when it is up and running

Discus are most definately the hardest tropical freshwater fish to keep....i would suggest unless your an expert to leave them well alone!!

they are the only fish ive ever kept that would deliberately starve themselves if they were unhappy

also if one gets sick............they all get sick.

serioussssssssly couldnt advise against them more!!

beautiful fish in the right hands.............complete expensive disaster in the wrong hands!!

Aren't Discus's one of the most hardest fish to take care of..?

If you're good with water quality, and such and your pretty wealthy, go for it.

Just dont kill it. ): (Picky eater, water quality, and the rest of the crap like diseases. Oh, and when they breed is so cool. >:) tons of little fishes around the dad or mom.)

let me just see if i have this write lol you are not going to keep oscars cause they are 2 hard 2 keep but your gonna go with discus instead  as above have stated discus are 1 of the hardest and demanding fish 2 keep and water quality has 2 be basically perfect all the time ..... really think you need 2 do some reasearch before jumping into discus over oscars :)

also if your dimensions are correct eventually if you did go with oscars they will out grow the depth of that as far as im aware

my mum wont let me have oscars because she wants a pretty tank & discus where my second option, i like a challange and i know they will be differcult but im ready for it. you can learn from other peoples mistakes and advise :)
but thanks for your time in replying and its gunna be kept in mind.

You're potentially making an expensive mistake...if you buy young you're looking at 50% water changes daily, and even when they get older they're still alot of work - its not just a challenge in keeping them (though it undoubtedly is) - its also a hell of a lot of work.

I'd strongly recommend you rethink it, and as truck said - something like angels are a gorgeous but more practical alternative.

discus are hard but if your up to it the learn everything there is to know about discus and then some more...they require 505 water changes daily when young and it becomes a bit eaiser when they get older but they still require top quality water conditions else they will happily strave themselves to death.

you will want to have an extra filter and stop qualuity lighting if you want to keep a lot of plants, co2 supplementation is also a must.

you may want to try angels first they are similar and don't require as much work.
