Ive Changed Me Filter Will It Still Work

I have a tube filter that has large slits in and was worried that my fry may be sucked up if i put them in, so i have put the tube in a tub with gravel all round the tube the water is puring out the top but will it still work

i am a newbie to fishkeeping as well.
when i open up my external filter for cleaning, there were more than 5 frys inside still swimming happily.
so what i did was put a fish net on my intake pipe so they won't be sucked in again.
but i haven't checked my external filter since so i do not know if this worked.
