Hello, a newbie here. I have my tanks as you can read below, but now it is filter time.

Tank is 75 gallon. Have decided to go with 2 Hang on Back filters (you can never have to much filteration!)

Not rich, but I am willing to purchase the best HOB for success of my new hobby (or obsession)

What are the best that you guys have used?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I can only give you a report on the Aqua Clear 300 as it is the only one I've used.

Pros:

Big area for filter material
Doesn't clog up
Easy access

Cons:

Prone to be noisy
No bio-wheel

Also you need your filters to process 10 gallons of water per hour for every gallon in the tank. So you need like 700 gallons per hour of filter power.

Which HOB's deal with that type of power? 700g

There are none that I know of. You will have to get two of them.

I have a 75 Gallon myself. I currently have an Emperor 400 and a Magnum 350 w. dual bio wheels. Since you want HOB, I would say that you should get an emperor 400 and maybe an AC 300 or 500.

That would give you both bio filteration (with the bio wheels on the Emperor) and mechanical filtration (with the Aquaclear).

   I was thinking 2 emperors

What u think?

I'd run two Emp 400's personally. They have mechanical filtration too -_-

I seriously don't think that Aquaclear is that great of a filter. I've have both a Emperor 400 and AC500, and IMO the Emperor is just simply put a better filter.

My 2 emperors 400's are on the way. I purchased online for only 45 bucks a piece, I feel that is good, cause I have seen them in stores for 75 to 90 bucks a piece.

Someone said both will be too much, but I say you cant have too much filteration!

Plus with fishless cycle and 4 bio wheels, that should make for great sized bacterial colonies!

I am sure you'll love them, 2 on a 75 is a perfect match. I overfilter all of my tanks so I agree you can't have too much filtration, current yeah but you can turn them down but I have 2 on a 55 and the current is just fine.

Let us know how you like em, now the hard part is waiting for the cycle to finish. :D

Sounds good! Also, never buy anything other than fish at the pet store. Hardware is usually marked up 200%-300% over online retailers in my experience.

I am beginning to realize this. It is hard (not really), I have a great lfs, that I plan to get my fish from. Sometimes I feel bad (not really) about NOT purchasing equipment from there. There fish selection beats most others in my area. But their equipment is so over priced. They had emperor 400 for 88.99. Even the local Petsmarts had them for 75. Another spot had them for 92.99.

Then I went online at petsmart.com actually and found them for 45.99
