One of my two newest additions, its just so cute I had to let someone else see it too.

The gravel is roughly 2-4mm, so its a tiny little thing

hate the gravel.

(jus incase it wasnt clear) thats why i was blind lol.

how bigs the tank? changing the substrate isnt as bigger job as you probably think and is definately worth it.

if ya do hate it that is.

It looked good in an empty tank, and hindsight is a wonderful thing, but now...yes its garish and I much prefer the look of my other tank which has dorset gravel instead.

This tank is 16 gallons and a 2x1 surface area, how disturbing would it be to the fish if I changed it? ie,could it be done with fish, plants etc still in the tank? How would I do it?

The only thing I know for certain is that I know nothing, and as long as I remember this I can't go wrong

unfortunately you do have to take everything out.

youll find as soon as you move the gravel there will be alot of crap stirred up.

its easy tho.

jus get a decent sized bucket ( i have an 80litre bin i use for anything like this. £7 from b&q or something).

put as much water as ya can plus filter, heater and fish into the bucket (the filters not that important, jus make sure it doesnt dry up).

switch the gravel and put everything back in.

you probably cant keep all the old water but itll jus be a nice fresh water change really...

you mite be able to get away with doing it with everything still inside if you gave the gravel a good vac for a couple of days in a row. should get rid of most of the crap then.

Hi we managed to change the substrate in my sons small tank without to much bother, we did it in stages took a bit out at a time and used a plastic cola bottle to guide the new gravel to the right area, we did take the fish out first though.

PS the gravel goes through the cola bottle base once you have cut it off and it is nessisary to chop the screw top bit of as well in order to allow for free flow, but this does mean you are quicker changing the substate.

I like that idea....clever people you all are,

anyway, having nothing better to do today,am now checking the water stats on my newly started 3ft tank, if all ok then will move all fish, plants from 2ft to 3ft tank, hook up the filter from the 2ft to run the 3ft alongside the existing filter, then empty, clean, redo the 2ft one....anything else I may have missed?

Hope it makes all you purists happier now...... :fun:
