When young they consume a lot of algae and any dead fish, but as they mature they attack other fish, even including very large fish. They will kill baby guppies, and injure adults. They can also become cannibalistic. Many pet shops don't bother to inform their customers of this aggressive behavior, so beware.

Is this true? This is the first time I've heard that ottos are aggressive, it's rather disturbing as I have guppies in my tank. Got it from this site:

Not true at all. Those mentioned are Chinese Algae Eaters. Otos stay small and peaceful.

That's what I thought. I was very surprised when I read that about ottos. Here's one of mine:

Otos, are very peiceful, mine just stay out of the other fish's way, and dont get into trouble, infact they are the fish getting bullied not being the bullys! lol

Thanks, Erised. Didn't see that before. That site is really misleading...

BTW, anybody know anything about otto subspecies? My sister mentioned mine might be vittatus (or something like that) rather than affinis, and it's supposed to be the least useful...

i made the original thread and i was also worried as i had 3 otos with 5 guppies and i was wondering what to do but as you can see they have clearly made a mistake
