How large is large? Most severum species can grow upto between 9 and 10 inches and like a dinner plate in shape. If they are that big then they might not get on with your Oscar. Otherwise, go for it as long as the upgrade is coming soon.

The upgrades in march and they around 6-7 inches each.
The upgrade will either be a 4x2x2 or 5ft depending on price at the time.

Yep was thinking silver dollars for dithers but not sure if the tank will be big enough.

Should work. Only variable will be how the breeding severums treat your oscar. Gosh, silver dollars are like 6 inch plates when they are fully grown lol I would go for some of the larger barbs instead.

Yeah that's what i'm worrying about, I would wait to buy the sevs but I know they won't be there when I'm ready.
I wanted to go for Denison Barbs but was told a 4 or 5 foot wouldn't be big enough.

Denisons are my ultimate favourite barb. As you say though they need a bigggg tank as they are very active. They also like lower temps as they are more of a temperate fish rather then full tropical. They have a shoal of fully grown ones at the blue planet. They mesmories me every time I go.

Arulius Barbs are quite nice and would fit in, but you would need the water to be well oxygenated as they are a mountain species.

Oh and they get to around 5 inches max.

They should be ok. The smaller members of the barb family may get eaten but these get to a nice size. Just make sure you buy them as large as you can.

I am pretty sure that mattlee used to keep these with his Oscar until frank (rtc x tsn) started snacking on them...

The price seems good, I paid around £17 for my Juvenile Severum (F1 Belum). It all depends on a) how much you want them and b) How big they are. I would just be wary about putting them in the tank with a 5 inch Oscar and the Jewel.

I am not sure where you are based, but I have just had a look on Peir Aquatics stocking list dated December 2011 and it states that they have the Barbs in stock at £8.50 each.

Thats a bit far for me, I may have to get my lfs to order me in some.
The severums are really nice but Im just worried about them with the oscar.
I wanted to do a tank like mats, an oscar, 2 other cichlids, some catfish and a couple of oddballs.
The jewels in a 20g right now for causing trouble.
