Well im gonna take the plunge into oscar land and i found a nice used local tank and i was just wondering if it was big enough for an oscar in the long run.

48" long and 18" wide.

its a 75 gallon supposedly and it comes with gravel.

will gravel be ok with an oscar? and also in this size tank could it have tankmates? im pretty much considering a medium sized pleco/catfish/sucker fish to clean up agfter him/her.

Lastly its a real good deal but it doesnt come with a filter, what filter would you recommend for an oscar in a 75g? im a fan of hang off the back filter but its not necessary

i have a in the aqUARIUM style filter and i despise it, everytime i try to change the media it sprays all over the tank with debri...........so annoying

well anyhoo thanks for your future expertise! :hey:

Hi, 75 gallon would be fine for an oscar and a nice plec :good: and as for a filter its upto you i would go for an external canister filter probably but it depends on how much you want to spend :good:

Sounds great. Your oscar should do well in a 75G Tank. When choosing a filter, just make sure you get a good one or maybe even two. Oscars are one of if not the messiest fish around. Make sure you do lots of water changes. Good Luck!

Hello,

I use Canister filters always for big tanks personally I run a Fluval F-X 5. I would recommend something smaller for you like a magnum 350 or something of that line! Also you can have two Oscar if you want!
And Yes canisters are hard to clean but its only once every three months as opposed to all the time!
Best Wishes!

You can have 1 oscar unlike what Anamagus said by 2.

Also the filter still need to be cleaned alot more often then 3months

:good:

For messy fish like an oscar I would go with 2 filters, a canister, & a hob. Set up the canister for bio filtration, the hob for mechanical. Difficulty of cleaning a canister depends on the make & model. A canister with shutoffs & media baskets is as easy as a hob. You will be paying for those conveniences though, by setting the canister up for bio filtration you can let it run for quite a while between cleanings, getting by with a model that doesn't have all the bells & whistles. I would go with one of the Eheim classics for a canister, & an Aqua Clear for the hob.

The tank is fine for one oscar & a plec, or 2 compatable oscars.

lol well i clean my tanks every sunday so these guys will go with the flow.

so an oscar and some sort of pleco, any recommendations for a pleco?

and aqlso what kind of oscar, in here its just 'oscar' but at the lfs its the albino oscar or the tiger oscar or the blah blah oscar.

which one is most personable or is it just the same?

wait i dont want 2 oscars i just want 1 on his/her own, will they be lonely or is this a better idea?

also willm the gravel be good?

also i found another local sell and this one was a 66.5 gallon tank with an Eheim 2217 filter and the width of the tank is only 16 inches, is that alright? or is it too thin?

I would really go for the 75 gallon, bigger is always better when it comes to oscars and plecs. I have an oscar, a parrot fish and a plec in my 125 gallon with two filters and even I sometimes find it hard to keep the tank clean. I do plenty of water changes and they are all healthy and happy in their 125 gallon.

I think he should be fine on his own in a 75 gallon. A plec really wouldn't clean up ALL of the Oscar's mess. I mean, Oscars are messy eating fish but as far as a good clean up crew, I'd probably go for a type of catfish that isn't too small for him to eat.

oscars are oscars; the different "types" such as tiger, albino, long-fin, et cetera are just different morphs of the same species.

one oscar should be fine on its own. oscars are pretty territorial and will definitely fight with other oscars of the same gender--this is why you really can't keep just two oscars together unless they're a mated pair.

plecs do not clean up after oscars. plecs create more waste then oscars, a plec is possibly the single worst fish you could ever own for waste output. so a plec and an oscar will need a good cansiter liek an eheim prof. II. thats what i use on my big tank. go for any type of plec really. there is many diferent colours and sizes but they all are similar in teh fact that they dont tend to bother the other fish. there are some very colourfull expensive plecs available time to time. mayb you could idulge yourself? :p

lol, i dont know about indulging.

i might just put the pleco from my 35g to the 75g or maybe ill go out and buy one thats is rare/special

i have a gold nugget/a common and some otto's in terms of suckers.

ill look around for another type and thats if i dont change the pleco from the 35g, or maybe i should get the other pleco which is in my mom's goldfish tank.

hes like 8 inches now and hes one of my fav fish in the house, always fights off the other fish for his vegetables and algue wafers
