Yes it can be used as a substate but it will cause areas of gas in the substrate that is dangerous for your fish if it is not moved about much.

just wash well i got mine from the early learning center i also mixed
mine with very fine gravel i have also used sharp sand as well but it
needs a lot of washing

good luck biff

Make sure you wash it thoroughly in a bucket, and you'll be fine.

Superb, the amounts they charge in aquatic stores is ludicrous. Will pick myself a couple of bags up this week!

Could you use the common sand that is found a sand bag as long as it is cleaned? I think it is just a basic silica sand and it can be found at any hardware store for very low costs.

i think 90% of TFF members are responsible for purchasing argos play sand lol

B&Q play sand is just as cheap and usable, for anyone whose Argos has run out due to TFF members getting there first.

speaking of B&Q, I ordered some spare parts for a python yesterday plannign to put it together with some hose from b&Q.

Do i need to get a specific one? Do the regular hoses contain any unwanted chemicals?

Nah you'll not have a problem with regular garden hose.

Only problem (well, consideration shall we say) is the internal diameter. My hose seems to be about 18mm, but it flows pretty damn slowly even with 700L of water 3 feet in the air pushing on it. My other hose (which is only 3 foot long so no good) is only about 2mm bigger, but flows far far more water on a straight syphon.

Make sure you get the right diameter for any hose fitments you use to make the python.

Thanks for the advice, I'll wait until the parts get here and take them down and see what fits best when i'm there. It seemed stupid paying the £60 for the 50 foot, when I could buy all the official parts for £15 and just pick up (a lot more) garden hose for cheap
