Its the stone from this basket on the right hand side. Weighs about 20kg, but not sure on the type..

Failing that, would any of the others be OK, reason I ask, is that they are £3.13 each :hyper:

no idea cos i cant see the photos, but do the vinegar test to find out

pour on a few drops of vinegar, if it fizzes then its NOT suitable, if it DOSENT then go ahead scrub them and add them :)

some stones/rocks alter the PH so you will have to keep an eye on that, like i said i can`t see the pics so can`t say, tho maybe someone else can :)

shelagh xxx

edit ........20kg  make sure your floor can take the weight

do a CTRL-F5 - hadnt added them to FTP space LOL

Already done the vinegar test, might do a nitrate test (the acidic one)

oh i see them now :D

look like any stones i have in my tanks to be honest ( obv im not a stone expert :p ), yeah do the ness tests and if all comes up trumps then add them,,, there a good price for the size.. i paid a fiver for a 6 inch effort from pets at home and i dont even use it :(

To be honest they look much like sandstone but in the right basket they have been rounded, possibly taken from a river or beach...

Water in itself weighs approx a kilo per litre. So if its displaces 20 litres he be fine LOL

you are forgetting that the rock is not the same density as water.. so it will either displace less water (which is my guess) than 20 litres or it will displace more..

they arent far off 20kg, i weight train so have a good guess on weights...

SO

it seems this rock might be ok for my aquarium .. might get a few more tomorrrow cause they are so cheap, at the LFS this rock would be £20 +

Thanks for your help people :D

The vinegar test is the best way to determine if it is ok. Put a few drops on it and if it fizzes, it will most likely raise your pH. The roundish rocks are what what we always called "potato" rock as they look like a potato. They have definitely come from a stream of some type as the years of tumbling and being washed over is what has made them smooth and round. As fifefish mentioned, sandstone would be my guess and it's fine for an aquarium.

Oh PANTS!

I went and bought a couple more today, and decided to do the vinegar test again by scratching a small hole in one of the rocks and filling it.

Guess what.

It fizzes.

Still it only cost me a tenner for all 3 rocks, looks like I will have to take them back now -_-

True, but depending on size of his aquarium. His floor might be holding upto several hundred kilos of weight already . So a 20 kilo stone will most likely be fine was being a bit jokey with the reply. But figured if the guy got aquarium big enough to hold that stone. Then he probably got a floor strong enough to taken another 20 kilos.

Could be wrong... but then its his floor not mine LOL

It has about 6 joists going under the tank, so will be fine. Half a ton is nothing, right? :shout:

Tank is looking good now

Just need to varnish it and get all the gubbins in. Then do a media cloning session from the old filter to the new one....
