Hello,

Got 3 pepper cories (yes getting lots more when big tank is cycled)

Always assumed only one was female, as it grew fatter/longer more quickly.
Other two are slimmer, though one has a taller dorsal fin.

Noticed the big cory, and small cory with small dorsal fin - have a bulge under and between pec fins. If viewed from the side it looks like they've been working out and got chiseled pecs.

Tried taking some pics tonight, and it looks more of a bulge now with veins over it...is this what it looks like when it is carrying eggs?

Looks like Thunderbird2 :)

i think you might be right :)

they've had 2 days with live worms. Lowered heater from 26 down to 23ish. Couple more cooler 25% water changes in for good measure...came home today to find:

There was about 20 on the glass and in the Ambulia plant. Unsure how long they had been there, but the platys were trying to eat them.

Rolled them off with finger (squashed one :( ), and put them into breeder net in same tank.

Are they fine to hatch and live in breeder net initially
i.e. they will be protected from bigger fish and being sucked up by filter..but is there another aspect i am neglecting?

My big (and only other) tank is still cycling...

they should be fine yes, if you have an airstone at all that may help initilly as it will stop fungus growing when placed right under the net.

congrats btw!

What you now need to do is buy lots of moss and other thick plants to help the fry hide and survive.
Keep the other fish well fed so they dont see the fry as dindins!

The fry should be ok in the net for a few weeks tbh as long as water quality is good, make sure they are well fed and protected from lights (floating plants and moss in the net).
Remember, a fish will eat anything that can fit in its mouth :)

congrats hun!

after 5 days...eggs are hatching, could see one eating its yoke thingy

pretty easy to find, as i've put them in their own little tank now, with some sand, a plant, sponge filter and airstone.

will give them some "Spectrum - small fry starter" tomorrow

eggs at 4 days (can see 2 white duds):

That's awesome. I'm trying to decide if I want to breed (save eggs) if/when my cories lay eggs. They did when I first got them (eggs were laid on anacharis plants and I just happened to see them), they haven't laid eggs since then (at least that I've seen).

Congrats!!!

I would love to breed my albino cories, but I cannot get past the sexing part. I don't know if I have opposite sexes or not. And if I do, what conditions to they need to breed?

Sexing albinos is quite easy compared to some, females are noticeably rounder & plump compared to the slender smaller males, condition them with live food or i feed mine defrosted bloodworm everyday plus cold water changes, they'll soon spurt into action if they're willing. :good:

Thank you harlequins. I started a thread here if you would like to take a look. I don't want to hijack this thread lol.

Chokko, your fry are simply adorable! I am hoping I can get my cories to breed if i have both sexes. It will definitely be a nice change from livebearers. :) Congrats!!

sadly a few fry have died, and more will follow...i.e. a few lethargic/floating around in the current.

this is the 1st batch of babies these cories have had

30x30x30cm tank

5mm of play sand across the bottom, 1 plant, 1 plastic archway thing to provide shade during day.

water is to top of the tank

20cm airstone going all day

sponge filter only.

50% water changed twice daily after feeding. Tap water, warmed, water ager added before going in tank.

has heater keeping it at 24C, though ambient temperature has raised it up to 26.5 at times due to high temps in entire house.

been fed the powder stuff (mentioned earlier in the thread) twice daily.
unable to find brine shrimp locally.
tried putting big Hikari bottom feeder tablet in there also (which the adults adore) to eat occasionally too (leaving it for 1/2hr to soak nicely)

ammonia and nitrite not visible on tests

no visible signs of growths/fungus

so unsure what is going wrong...water level too high in the tank? water changes too often? should use water from big tank instead of fresh dechlorinated water? dont like the food?

Its not uncommon to lose fry,its very hit & miss sometimes, which i've found out along the line...

The temp is a tad high, try setting the heater at 22 degrees, peppers prefer cooler temp anyway, then if it does rises it won't go to much over 24 degrees, which is fine :good:

Do you clean the sand after each feed? bacteria soon grows on uneaten food, not visable to the naked eye,but to delicate new fry can prove fatal.

For the first 2-3 weeks i use the tank water from the adult tank, then has they grow change to fresh dechlorinated water, but to be honest has long has you temperature match the water going in and put it in gently, they should be fine.

I haven't heard of spectrum until i looked it up,but seems fine,my usual fry food is tetramin baby & defrosted baby brine shrimp, which is very good and i change to mini granules has they get bigger.
I've also got off ebay decapsulated brine shrimp eggs, which seems ok also if unable to get fresh/frozen bbs.

I've tried hatching the bbs at home to give them live food, but end up with too much and end up throwing it away
