I put a plant in and he seems to be going in it a lot and resting on the leaves (although I can't see how they would support him) and he rests on the bottom quite a bit. Plus when he does swim about, he flares a LOT. I'm assuming he can see his reflection but there's nothing (no background, etc) on any sides of the tank so there's not much I can do about it. He also flares at me a lot but it doesn't hurt my feelings or anything. Just wanted to make sure it's not going to wear him out too much.

is he new to the tank? it might be just cause hes in a new environment
He is new. He's been here for 2 days now. So I guess it's normal-thanks!

They love to rest on things. Mine rests on his java fern all the time, and my other one flares at things constantly, no matter what it seems to be!

All of it sounds normal.

OK new issue. I was watching him and he was lying in the plant near the intake tube. Then he just sort of slowly sidled up to the tube and wrapped himself around it and sat there, sucked up to it. I think I read somewhere that they do this sometimes to rest (maybe on bettatalk? Can't remember now), but it freaked me out a little. I put a mirror up and he just started flaring, still stuck to the tube. I took the mirror away and he kind of shook himself part off the tube but then settled back on it. So I shut off the filter and he got off of it and since then has been swimming around like normal. I know it sounds crazy but it looked like he got on there as if he knew exactly what he was doing.

that is kinda wierd, maybe the filter sucked him up and he couldnt get out? but since u said he seemed to know what he was doing it sounds like he was just being silly lol

He did it again this afternoon and the kids freaked out. lol. I said it was ok (although it freaks me out too) and in a couple of minutes he dislodged himself and now is swimming around like normal.

He doesn't seem to be eating his betta bits though. I'm going to get some frozen for him tomorrow and maybe some betta bio gold.

Maybe he's figured out it feels good..kinda like when you get your hair washed, at the hair salon, or some thing lol.

I think your little guy might be a bit tired. I find that when I have my filtre going for over 10 minutes my one betta in the tank gets really tired and wedges himself between two stalks of a plant i have in there.

I don't think they are that strong of swimmers due to their looong fins and tails so constant moving of water makes them tired because theyare always trying to swim against the current. Imagining running with weights attatched to your feet and also having a huge wind blowing against you. Hehe you'd get pretty tired fast

My females in my community tank LOOOVE to take naps on the filter intakes. They're just plain lazy. When one of them has been on it too long, on of the other girls will come over and eyeball her till she leaves, then take her place. Kinda like the way my cats fight over the cat bed that's next to the heater.
