The other day i dropped my light in the tank. i've gotten water on them before with no issue..but htis time it was really in there..i let it dry out for the day but when i turned it on, and came back from eating, the apartment smelled of something burning. I found it was the light, the little box in the back of it is fried.

So I'm trying to cheaply get my lighting back up. I thought I'd see what walmart had for flourescent lights. cause it seems there's got to be something you would use around your house, that would be cheaper than buying these light fixtures.

I found something that had a bulb of the same wattage in it, and i think they are both t8's.

is there any reason this light wouldn't work? I'll figure out some way to get it on top of my tank..maybe screw it into the old fixture's casing..idk.

here's a link to the thing: http://www.lightsofamerica.com/en/Products/7000.aspx

Why not go to the local home improvement center and buy a replacement ballast for your existing fixture? You can usually pick one up for about $20 that will match the one that you ruined. Wire it up the same way as the one you burned up and you will be back in business. It sure beats having something that doesn't look right on the tank. You could even upgrade to an electronic type ballast and get more energy efficiency out of your fixture.
