well as you know I have had my new boy less than a week, and I have noticed some damage forming on his pelvic fin. there does seem to be a lighter transparent 4mm at the edge of his fins, which I had originally thought was a growth area as he is quite young I think. But now this has happened I am wandering if he has finrot. I have never managed to have a fish survive after finrot settles in, so what do I do
He is in a 28L tank, with plants, ammonia and nitrite are 0. pH is 7.2 and temp is 27. I performed 25% waterchange, and have added a teaspoon of sea salt to his tank. What else can I do...I intend to do 25% water changes daily. How will I tell if its helping. Oh, and he eating very well, and behaving normally, no flicking etc

I have now removed the filter and added 4ml of melafix....bottle said 5ml per 38L, and its a 28L tank, taking into consideration decor volume theres probably around 24L of water in there.

It looks similar to the damage my boy received, only my boys tail split all the way to his body! You also might try Bettafix, which you can get at your LFS. That is what I am using to treat Rockstar's injuries, and in 3 days the improvement was huge! Beautiful betta though....I am in love with his color.

thanks guys. I am treating with melafix, so hopefully if it is finrot, it will get rid of it.

It should. If it is finrot, its very mild and you caught it really quick. I cannot see the transparencies in the photo, which you would be able to if it was severe. I think your boy is going to be just fine :)

Just wondering, why did you remove the filter?

Also, Melafix probably won't help: it is tea tree oil, which does not do very much at all. You'd be better off making sure the water is clean or using a real medication.

I removed the filter as the only media in there is a carbon based sponge, and I dont want my bacteria to die. I have it running in a bucket with some tank water, and I am putting ammonia into it, with a view to doing a redose every 24 hours to keep the bio media from dying.
Ok, I shall monitor the melafix, with it being an antibacterial, and finrot being a bacterial disease, I had assumed it would work, as several members on this forum have advised its use previously.

Unless you replace your carbon sponge every few days, it's just a sponge now, not a carbon sponge, so it's safe to leave it in for treatment (unless the medication is known to kill filter bacteria). Carbon is normally used up in a matter of hours to a few days, depending on the tank :good: It's very good that you're feeding the bacteria while it's out!

Tea tree oil is actually an antimicrobial (which means antibiotic, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic, in this case), but the concentrations needed for it to be as effective as what I refer to as "real" medications would very likely kill the fish and the filter. Basically, proper medications are more targeted at what we want to kill and more effective because they can be more concentrated. Also, there has been very little research done into which bacteria are affected by tea tree oil, although it is known that it will kill fish if overdosed.

Tail Biting I'd say. I bought one from there and he tore his tail to shreds. They said 5 others had done the same. It looks exactly like my boys tail. Email them and they'll tell you what to do.

I havnt seen him bite his own tail, and although I dont constantly watch him, I do watch him throughout the day. the transparent layer on the ends of his fins, has got wider since yesterday, so I am beginning to think it is finrot, but he is acting normally, his water parameters are 0 and I am performing daily water changes...sometimes twice a day. we'll see how it goes, but my ability to cure this is nil in the past. I have never had a fish survive it, but I shall keep trying with him as hes my darling

If you think it's fin rot, treat the tank with a course of myxazin and see if that helps! :good:

I never sa my guy do it either. Finrot tends to be more even. Tail biting you'll see chunks gone, bits may come off. His tail will split. Try a 5 day course of myxazin that works. If it's tailbiting it won't. I would also email bettaboys and show them the pic.

One of my males got finrot when he came to me. A 5 day course of myxazin soo cured him. It's the stress of travel and a new home which lowers their immunity that causes these problems at first.

I will say though, your pic looks exactly how mboy started off and it was tail biting. Seeing as he came from the same seller and they said they had 5 others doing it I'd email them. They gave me loads of advice on how to treat it. Also are there any plastic plants he can snag his tail on in the tank?

Hi Marie...there are only real plants and some large stones, which arent smooth, but are not sharp. I have taken them out of the tank, and put a "bridge" ornament in so he has somewhere to nestle down. I shall email James and ask what I can do. Thanks

Hi,

Just wanted to check in to see how your bettas doing
