K so what is this? It looks suspicious to me... but am I an absolute idiot and it's an air bubble?

It’s a sack of snail eggs. If you don’t want baby snails, remove it as soon as possible.

If they are snail eggs, then which type?
Either pond or bladder snail eggs. They lay their eggs in sacks, usually on glass or plants.

Regardless, they are still pest snails and will continue to quickly repopulate.

And, there's probably more than one in the tank...:(

Make a mini-vac, and vacuum them up and out of the tank:

Get a length of airline tubing. Get a wire clothes hanger, and cut out the long straight piece at the bottom, leaving a curved edge on one end for a handle. Get some zip ties, and attach one end of the airline tubing to the hanger. Don't cinch the zip ties too tightly, or it will restrict flow.

You will have to start the vacuum with mouth suction, be very quick with this action, and have a bucket nearby for the water to drain into (the bucket must be lower than the tank for gravity suction). The hanger will make one end of the airline tubing rigid, so that it is easy to maneuver within the tank, and give you precise aim at the egg sacs....as well as hard-to reach detritus on the substrate.

This is actually what I use to drain my 5.5G tanks during WC's, the Python is too big for such a small tank.

I'm at work right now, I will try to remember to post a pic of mine for you when I get home this afternoon.
