the garden centre where i work sells 100% natural crushed seashells for use like gravel on flowerbeds etc, now what i was wondering is this at the moment the pieces are too big and sharp looking but what if i were to crush them even further, would they be suitable to be used in the tank? because i can get a 25kg bag for a couple of quid. really appreciate any input on this one

I would proberbly say that they would still be too sharp unfortunately. They would be like little shards of Glass... Just my 2pence :) Nice idea though :good:

hmmm i was thinking of really grinding this stuff up, after all isnt sand basically pulverised shells?

I think if you could get it small enough then it would be no different from sand i suppose :) Just depends if you can get it fine enough. But in that case, WHy not :D

i will call the suppliers tomorrow to check that its aquarium safe, but i cant see why it wouldnt be as its described as 100% natural and i hate the thought of paying between 20 and 40 quid for a bag of sand

It would depend if they have treated it for anything I would guess, you never know they might have used some harmful chemical to wash it

Arsenic is also 100% natural. I'd check it just to be sure.

If it says 100% Natural sea shells then it'll be fine, it's pure calcium carbonate.

well it turns out that the company selling this stuff do clean the shells, but only with water, no chemicals or bleaching agents are used at all and i was advised that it is aquarium safe. so i think a 50/ 50 mix of these with some sand may be the way to go, providing i can crush the shell small enough for what i want and for a couple of quid it might be worth trying and then i can always rinse through with RO
