is this a problem?

I think I might have the same thing going on with my mollies. Hopefully someone can help tell us what it is and how to treat it.

it looks as if its on the outer skin, i dont know if its spreading more i noticed it on one because of the rubbing on stuff then noticed it on another as it started to rub agaist stuff as well.
Were in agreement that rubbing against stuff is a bad sign though? somethings not right. im sure its not the water qualitiy what ever the cause as i have been doing at least 3 30% chages a week because of tanning my drift wood created during tank startup.

Hmm, when did you add that drift wood? Also, what is your water parameters? What is your nitrate level? Rubbing is bad. Take a look at the other thread about this happening right now: http://fish.orbust.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=49178 . Let's try to find some similarities if we can. I don't think the other person's fish are flashing.

ive just found this thread http://fish.orbust.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=49270
sound similar to what my platties are displaying, according to this its happiness, not now ive put that green stuff in my tank.
errrmmm.
still doesn't explain the rubbing against things but on that thread they seem to be doing the same with no signs of desease. one has just given birth and the other is preggers (i think) would that explain it? (stretch marks itching?) :dunno:

Every instance of flashing that I've seen has been because the fish's skin is irritated. What could be in the water that is irritating their skin? Malachite green will do that sometimes on certain fish.

Could it possibly be something like Slime Disease? I don't know much about this condition, but it might be worth you looking up to see if it's similar to what your fishies are experiencing. It happens when a fish produces too much slime coat (I think), & can give a grey, whitish, or sometimes blue appearance (http://www.angelfire.com/blues/fish_problems/SLIMEDISEASE.html). I believe it is usually caused by a parasite, & can kill if let go too far.

Not saying this is definitely it (actually it probably isn't) but it is probably worth looking at if the fish did start flashing before you added the malachite green & if you're really stuck for other answers.

HTH a bit, goodluck :)
Michelle.

I agree with you, I doubt it's it. My mollies are starting to get it too, and they are most definitely not stressed. It's the alpha male that's starting to develop this coloration brightly. My water conditions are perfect in a brackish tank. I don't think anything is wrong with them. Don't know about the one that's flashing, might want to look at something other then the coloration as an irritant. Let's keep watching and keep each other posted please.

P.S. Maybe it was the wood. That would be my thought.

The fish that seems most effected has been alieneted by the other 2 platties, all she does is hide all day/night because the other female and male chase her away or try to attack her if shes openly swiming or foraging.

Yours might be that slime coat thing since it's stressed. Make sure you're water quality is perfect until this clears over. I would still suspect the wood. Did you boil it first?

If you boiled it first it shouldn't have any problems. Where did you get this wood from?

pets at home. derby.
shes in quarentine now as we have noticed a red blemish protruding from her left side just in front of her fin, kinda looks like a bite.
The odd thing is she seems a lot more active since shes been on her own.

 man, shes just died, got her out and took a good look at her scales, it just seemed to be her natural colouring? The red mark is worrying though. it seemed to be under the skin, not the bite i thoght it could be. it looked like a bright red spot (quite big) large enough to make the area swell.
any ideas.
sounds bad i know but i just hope its nothing serious as im kinda worried for the rest of my tank as i only quarentened her today.
i'll keep a close eye.

:( no now i have lost my honey gurami and 2 neon tetras. whats going on with my tank. ammonia is 0 nitrite is 0 nitate is 10 and ph is 7.5, i cant see any signs of infection or illness on any of these recent fatalities.
