Hello,

I just found out about the Pothos plant and how it helps. So I thought I would give it a try. But I’m not sure if I got the right plant or even if I got the right Pothos if I did.

Also I’m not sure how I’m supposed to go about doing this?

Do I fully submerge it? Dip the roots and hang the rest of the plant? Both or either are okay?

I just want to make sure I do it right.

Also how do I cut its stems?

I appreciate any and all advice.

Thank you!!

Need a picture of the base of the plant (where the leaves going into the soil) to help identify it.

Normally with terrestrial plants, you let the bottom roots (not all the roots) grow into the water. The main root system and leaves all stay out of the water. The plants can then develop water roots that can sit in the aquarium.

You can have the plant in a pot with some potting mix and simply hang it above the tank so the bottom 1/2-1 inch of the pot is in the water. You can also take the plant out of the pot and wash the soil off, then put it in a clean pot with a hydroponic growing medium like clay balls, but potting mix is normally fine and you don't harm the plant by messing about with the roots.

Make sure pot plants don't have vermiculite mixed in with the potting mix. Vermiculite is usually found in association with asbestos and can be harmful if you inhale dust from it. If it's wet, it's not an issue but just try to avoid plants with vermiculite in the potting mix.

Vermiculite looks likes bits of white polystyrene foam that is flat and has gold flecks in it. Most places don't use it these days due to the asbestos issue but some places still do.

Yep that looks like Pothos. You need to take it out the pot and remove all the soil and rinse it until you get bare roots. Then you need to suspend the roots in the water making sure that the stems and leaves all stay out of the water.
