ok imm new here.. to these type of fish and i was at the pet store today and i asked the guy what kind of fish can be in the tank with cichlids... he said no other fish then cichlids.... so cichlids can only be in there own tank..

i'd say he was right, for the most part anyway. im sure that your safe with cats, all except corys.

i believe its true in the case of some cichlids but not all, therefore saying all cichlids cannot be kept wtih anyting btu cichlids is totally untrue...i (and many others on this board) have kribensis which is a dwarf cichlid and i have 4 rummy nose tetras and 3 zebra danios in there, in fact its reccomended to have some tetras or something in the fihs tank to be used as dither fish. so to get a better answer find out what kinda fish you can keep in your size of tank and then see what works for you then ask if you can keep other fish wtih them, if you choose mbuna (im no expert) i believe its good to just keep them with mbuma

Completely depends on the cichlid species in question, with Mbuna that would be true for the most part with certain exceptions. What species of cichlid are you interested in?

i like krip and yellow labs

Kribs can go with many community fish provided the tank is big enough - something like a 3 footer is ideal with a 20 gal being the minimum if you want to keep other fish. Yellow labs are Mbuna and should only be kept with other Mbuna species.

I have a pair of kribs with danios, a dyed fish, and swordttails in a 20g flat hexagon high. I havent had any probs yet.

This is "generally" true with most africans and larger new world cihlids. One notable exception is New World Dwarfs which "generally make good community fish (with the right tankmates). With cichlids, tankmates need to be well chosen - stick with the tried and true combinations.
